Need help ID'ing Japanese Maple cultivar

I'm hoping someone here might recognize this cultivar of Japanese Maple (not even sure if it's palmatum or japonicum). It's growing as a small, upright (but wide-spreading) tree on a college campus in upstate New York (zone 5). Thanks!
