You should thank your lucky stars that all the ones you have put in the ground have croaked, this plant, although gorgeous when it blooms, is the most invasive thing I have had the misfortune of planting. It spreads underground everywhere, I've had it come up 20 feet away from the mother plant. Yes it will freeze back every Winter and then you have all those dead vines to prune off and get rid of, too. Spare yourself the troubles, kill it now or put it in a pot on an impervious concrete surface so the roots won't go through the drainage hole.

I keep mine in a big pot with the trellis on my lanai with all the other plants together. The lanai has a curtains I close at night and when it's too cold or near freezing. It doesn't even lose the leaves. Planted one in the ground and it froze and didn't come back this year.
