This isn't an advice post, so to speak...
But can we PLEASE move on from this farmhouse trend?!?!
What's your prediction for the next big design trend?

I am happy to move on from farmhouse. My prediction is eclectic decor that is full color and bold design. Its only my predition because that is the style that I like, not because I think things are actually going in that direction in anyone elses home other than my own. LOL

I do traditional, so I don't do trends. Usually trends swing back and forth like a pendulum. So the reaction to all of Joanna Gaines farmhouse and the gray thing will probably be modern and color. What I hope happens is that people stop using 1) white subway tile, 2) random colored cabinetry, 3) Edison lights, 4) the color gray, 5) all white kitchens. 6) the look of Carrara marble. Things I would like to see more of are .... granite as art, texture, layering, broadening of what is considered "neutral" colors (to include navy). I think appliances are going to continue to transition from stainless to a graphite steel finish. I think dark kitchen cabinetry will come back as a reaction to all of the white we've been seeing. I know I am (and I think others will) continue mixing metals and continue mixing warm and cool colors together.

Who knows? Who cares? Do what you like--be original!

It is easier to think about what will go away...what kicks off a trend? There are no fresh decorating shows on TV anymore to jump kick trends...Gaines has been done...Sarah R is't on. A HUGELY popular epic TV show ala "Dallas", could inspire a trend..but how do we predict that?

Not everybody has been sucked into it sweetie. Some people design for themselves and what THEY love. If you feel it's the "only trend" you are a trend follower by choice; Nobody says you need follow anybody, or any "trend". You decorate for your own likes and needs. ........and hopefully with some appropriateness to the home in which you live, all its functions, and your own needs considered as well. Doesn't look like a farm to me..............................

To me there is "farmhouse" and there is farmhouse. One was designed to sell you crap from China. The other will always appeal to me.

I have never gone with trends only what I love and each home we have had had a different “style” I guess it depends on the house a lot IMO. I have however found I love different things at different times in my life. I will however be really happy to see the end of farmhouse sinks and edison bulbs.

LOL!!!!! "Your decor is reminiscent of an earlier time.........is that your intent?." ORB light anything bye bye please, and take the bulb with you. If you pass the farm sink on your way out? Grab that too.

I love the diversity of everyone's style but I am tired of seeing farmhouse this, farmhouse that, everywhere I turn. In articles, shops (I have 6 "farmhouse" style shops within a 1 mile radius of my home) , RVs. Maybe I follow the wrong pages...
personally, I'm an MCM fan myself. Although, I remember my days of decorating like the Trading Spaces designers and loving it. lol. I never realized it'd be so hard to remove leaves from my walls back then...

I am loving this discussion though! ♡

I was watching The Little Couple (yes, I watch it) and Jen speaking to a decorator about their new house. She mentioned she wanted her favorite "beach decor but farmhouse". ?

Chip and Joanna Gaines are getting their own network, so it ain't over. Suck it up, buttercup. ;-)

It's color, and lots of it.

I’ve seen a step up in ‘autumn’ colors like warm grey, rust orange, ochre, navy, etc. As someone said, an expansion of a neutral pallet. Still grey, but not so cold, and balanced out with desaturated colors. (Of course, we’re IN fall now so some of that is to be expected). I think Modern Farmhouse will become a suburban mainstay of sorts, but much less saturated. It won’t be ‘on trend’ and only people who genuinely like it will pursue it, much like Tuscan Villa. To counteract all the grey, I predict a swing towards more traditional warmer stylings and/or vibrantly colored modern stylings depending on your bend. Wood cabinets will make a come back, as will ornate woodwork to combat all the flat panel shaker doors.

I'm following the thread, but I'm not following any trends!

Enjoying this discussion greatly. I honestly never "got" the farmhouse thing. I think the Edison bulbs are interesting and can admire/appreciate them, but in YOUR house not mine.

I have never been a fan of MCM. To me, it is reliving my dentist;s waiting room which was his cast off living room furniture. I guess I am dating myself but anyway it's not appealing to me. At all.

I have been back and forth about the white kitchens, yes they are so predominant that they lose some of the freshness because of that, but I do like them and think they are pretty classic.

To me, there is an aspect of it that is sort of like white trim and molding. Not going anywhere and just looks good.

I think I prefer wood, but am in the midst of a renovation (25 year old solid but very uninspired builder oak cabinets with white formica top and appliance that match) and trying so hard to figure out what I would love and then trying to figure out what makes sense.

I enjoy gray in moderation but am basically a lot more traditional/transitional so warmer colors speak to me. I love the jewel tones of the 80's 90's.

I've got a client in Florida doing something pretty original sounding with her decor. Lots of darker colors.. it almost sounds a little retro. I'll get pictures as soon as I can. She is using our Black Walnut flooring.

Oak + Broad... yes! pleaae share! I've always loved darker colors but have been scared to use them myself.

She is using black/ebony paint colors if I remember correctly. I plan to get professional photography once its all finished.

If she has black walnut flooring and lots of black/ebony colors, she probably has a maid service. All that stuff shows dust so clearly. I learned my lesson with black when IKEA first came to the US; never again.

I want practical (as well as nice looking).

Non Pro here. It is much easier for Professional Designers to go non-trend than for mid level economic customers. We look at your designs and try to find something similar in our neck of the woods. Your newer designs reach our stores 1-2 years later. I waited 5 yrs. for the oversized roll arm sofa look to go out of favor before buying a couch.

Bohemian and bright colors will be easier to achieve through fabric, paint and a bit of quirkiness. So no problem there. However, as I age I'm favoring more minamilistic - clean lines. I think it's fabulous that there are so many different styles available to see now. Thanks google and Houzz. And thank you Pros who advise us how to make it all come together with compostion, size, tones, editing and good design knowledge.

I'm hoping that what I like will be "in" but that will never happen since it's English country house style (as opposed to English cottage style). However, designers like Bunny Williams and Charlotte Moss do a version of that style, and it runs along classic lines which means it never looks out of style. The whole trend and style thing is largely market driven, meant to make as much money as possible for the industry, and I've never bought into it. Unfortunately many people do, which means that we've been seeing the everything gray trend and the Joanna Gaines trend, both of which look awful in the wrong hands. The MCM trend looks cold and uninviting to me, but seems very popular with younger people and so will probably stay "in".

We're told that warm white walls will replace the gray, and that we'll see a lot more color, and that's a good thing because hopefully that will mean livable rooms instead of gray shrouds. I really hope sectionals will be "out" because they're too large for many rooms, which however has not stopped people from shoehorning them into small rooms, to disastrous effect. Compared to the past most people seem to be clueless about style, color and what looks right in their space, partially because they read less and don't "have time" to inform themselves. This forum mirrors that, since in the past there were many beautiful rooms featured here compared to the mostly colorless, rather grim and also often distressingly messy ones that are often seen now. I hope that more people will educate themselves and try to figure out what they love, and the internet is a great help because there are thousands of examples of beautiful rooms in any style you can imagine to look at and gain inspiration.
