Bathroom Tile Alignment~

Hi Everyone,

The tiles in our bathroom don't seem to line up with each other. The tiles on the floor don't line up with the tiles on the side of the tub, which don't line up with the edge tiles, which don't line up with the tiles on the tub. My husband and I know this is something that will bug us but we're not sure if that's normal. Our current apartment bathroom, which we didn't design, also doesn't have the tiles lined up. Is there maybe even a reason for this? Can we/should we say something? Any advice/thoughts would appreciated. This is a builder grade bathroom without any updates to the tile, tube. etc. Thank you!

The tile was laid in way easiest for the tile installer for each plane or surface, without regard for how the tile in each plane relates to other tile areas. It's very amaturish...if that's the quality you get in this particular house, with this particular builder, I'd stop and look elsewhere. If this is the quality you get on something highly visible, just think about the assemblies that are not visible.

If the edge tiles had been the same length (or a fraction of the length, say 1/2 or 1/3) as the other tiles, grout lines would have run continuously from the top of the tub to the floor. For some reason, grout lines of the floor tile are wider than those of the vertical tile, causing the tiles to become further and further out of line from right to left. IMO the selection of the edge tile and, more importantly, the installation of the floor tile were incorrect. -- amateur

I rarely comment, but Trubuild’s appeasing comment, which you seem to accept, is terrible and not helpful. The tiles should line up. As you hoped and expected. It isn’t too much to ask, so you should insist on it being fixed. There’s plenty of other stuff in the world for you and your husband to be bugged about and this isn’t it!

If the builder looks at you cross eyed, get a discount, or better yet, an upgrade you’d really like to have elsewhere in the home to compensate. You’ll be using a mat there anyway.

For sure, use grout that blends into the tile as much as possible. Agree it should have been a better match, but it may disappear when grouted.

Sorry but honestly this is a horrible tile job and could have been done perfectly IMO.I would demand a redo . It is just so bad there is no point in trying to live with it. I don’t understand stacked tile and then none lined up edge tile all the tile was the same such a simple thing to do right. What is the box beside the right just out of curiosity.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I really appreciate it. I truly just wasn't sure what we should expect (this is why the Houzz community is amazing - so many answers so quickly). I will talk to the builder after hearing from everyone. Patricia - The box on the right side is a seat for the shower.

Just on a phone here but there appears to be no waterproofing on that seat. I realize they are in process but they appear to be getting ready to Install the tile...

Yeah, that's a pretty lousy job and it would definitely bug me too. I can't for the life of me figure out how they got so far off in such a small area if they are all the same size tiles. Anyway, if you do lay a bath mat down to hide it, it would probably be ok . . . maybe . . .

It just amazes me how contractors try to get away with such horrible craftsmanship. It really doesn't take that much more time to measure, snap lines, use a square, and do things right. Yet, we see lousy jobs and terrible craftsmanship on this forum everyday.

I'm sorry for you and I hope your contractor will get this resolved.
