When you love a rug but it doesn’t cover the area, it’s prime for layering. Place a simple rug underneath in a natural material (jute, rattan or seagrass work well) to cover the difference.

I’ve had a 10x14 Seagrass rug in my main living area for 20+ years. I switch out a smaller patterned rug just under the sofa end. I get bored easily but can’t afford to continually change out a huge rug, so this lets me change it up. To me the Seagrass rug is like a pair of jeans, it goes with pretty much anything.

The bottom rug needs to be much larger, and the top is best as a hide.......something more shapely, and a significant accent. Or a bold decorative askew and lot smaller than the beneath. Watch for color bleed on a vegetable dye onto a natural fiber too. A hide has the most impact, really. Either way. a rectangle on a rectangle same directtion doesn't cut it for me. ..........: )

The movement over geometry.....as below? Much nicer. Otherwise it just looks like the rug you really wanted wasn't big enough : )

Just watch the heights of the various rugs so you don't create a "tripping hazard". That's why a hide works well on top of natural material. It is thin. I have a personal like of having soft things under my feet since I live in warm climate and are barefoot in the house most of the time. So natural materials are like walking on a door mat to me. Not my fav.
