Yes, they are surface mount. We couldn't put recessed cans in because of ductwork in the wrong places.

If you do not have under cabinet lighting, make it a priority. It will lighten up the corners especially and give a sparkle to the whole kitchen. I do most of my prep between the sink and range - similar to yours in layout and the under cabinet lighting is so helpful. No matter how good the overhead light is, it causes you to cast a shadow on the counter which the under cabinet lighting will remove. Under cabinet lighting is also important to help lighten up kitchens with darker countertops.

We do have plans for under cabinet lighting....it is already wired and waiting to go. The ceiling lighting is also on a dimmer switch. Unsure of what light fixtures would look good in the kitchen and breakfast nook.

Is the kitchen open to a family room? What is the FINISH on the surface mount? Satin nickel?

Maybe glass and metal pendants? A copper with patina to play off your countertops. Copper or bronze would only work if the existing lights have white trim and blend with the ceiling.
