I use chicken wire to keep the squirrels from getting into anything they might dig up and/or eat--for me it's mostly to keep them from eating my semps, but I also cover freshly planted almost-anything to keep them from digging in the "soft" soil. I have pieces of both 1" and 2" laying around so I use whatever's convenient at the time, but 2" works just fine to keep squirrels out--and it's cheaper! I use "landscape pins" to tack it down well enough to keep them from pushing it off to get to what they want. You can also use short pieces of stakes shoved thru the wire and into the soil in a couple places to "pin" it down.

I always do that. I try to use clay pots (for the weight) but plastic works if you place a rock or brick on top.'

I make sure to water underneath when watering other things.

I really haven't had a problem with bulbs emerging too soon.

And once the soil has frozen or you have snow, I wouldn’t expect it to be a problem unless the soil doesn’t freeze wherever you are in the Denver area.

If you don't mind the look of something above ground, I use wire trash baskets from the Dollar Tree. Like these:

Upside down with landscape pins to hold them down. I have about 100 tulip bulbs covered with several of these. You can also add leaves or mulch before securing with the landscape pins.

I use these over pots as well in the summer. Stupid squirrels!

You can also make cloches from chickenwire that look really nice too.
