I just finished remodeling my bathrooms.

The designer gave me canned lights as well as wall sconces over the vanity area which are actually installed on the mirror - my vanity mirror runs from wall to wall with decorative mirror elements on top of the wall mirror.

There is a can light over the shower.

My sconces over the vanity really are there for aesthetics as I don't normally turn them on as the canned lighting is more than sufficient.

California Code requires that lights in a bathroom have motion detectors which turn on and then off after a certain period of time with no motion. At first I thought I was going to find it strange - especially if I got up in the middle of the night - but I actually like them a lot as it is one less thing to have to remember to do. The only glitch was the first time I used the shower and I didn't also turn on the lights and so they turned off in the middle of the shower because evidently there wasn't enough motion for it to detect so I finished the shower in romantic twilight :-).

My toilet seat also goes up when I approach which I also thought was unnecessary but I really got used to it after a few days and when I inadvertently turned the mechanism off, I really missed it until I called tech support the next morning :-). It's soft closing as well - another nicety I didn't realized I would like until I actually got it.

My bath is a 5 x 8.5 ft rectangle with the 38" x 63" shower to the side of that rectangle. I have a light above the two med cabs and two can lights in the shower. We hardly ever even turn on the light in the ceiling exhaust fan, between those two sets of lights. I do have high lumen output on the vanity lights, though. I brush my teeth to the light of the lamp inside my medicine cabinet! We really do have light for any mood in there!
