Questions to consider:

These are going to be grown as containerized plants or as in-the-ground landscape plants?

Where are you located?

Assuming that you are somewhere in the Northern Hemisphere, I would hold back on changes until the Spring. Even with an inappropriate soil, they should be fine until the growing season begins, just refrain from excessive moisture (especially if temps are cool). Cycads transplant relatively well and it shouldn’t require a power washing when you transplant into a better mix (cycad roots tend to be course and the peat should break away easy enough especially if on the drier side). Good advice above. When you are getting ready to plant them and when they are out of the pots, tap them on the ground to knock off a decent amount of the pure peat. This species grows in sand in habitat, so it likes the extra drainage. Just don't fertilize them till maybe a month after you plant them.

Think I'm at the pt where I'm contemplating almost always bare-rooting when tansplanting (particularly when the "new soil" is relatively optimal and the potential damage minimal).

Something like, say, a Texas Sage is probably better off w/o the crap they to sell it in here, especially if bare-rooting it won't have a sig detrimental impact.

Then again I'm trying to keep in mind the fact that bougainvilleas or palms (and potential certain cycads) don't want to be messed with much even if they've been packed into crap.

So I'm glad/really appreciate the recommendations/advice re how to go about things with an eye on... the best/better of both worlds.
