This is normal in all living things. Not everything or everyone comes out perfect. Survival of the fittest applies to gardening. I grow a lot from seeds. I just pull and toss the ones that aren't sturdy or perfect for growing. It happens all the time...thinning. Occasionally there will be an unusual seedling that interests me for some reason and I let it grow to see what happens, with variable outcomes.

Thanks! I'm actually thrilled about this one because I can only grow these on the balcony, and there's not enough sun to keep Dianthus from getting spindly and flopping over. (But I foolishly try anyway.) This super dwarf one is still short, upright and chubby, and I think it's starting to bud.

It would be great if I've stumbled on one that will perform in my less than ideal conditions. I might have to sow the rest of the pack to see if there are more like it.

You should be able to propagate it very easily from pipings...and maybe start your own, perfectly suited cultivar. Many favourite plant varieties have emerged from just such circumstances...and the dianthus superbus do tend to be somewhat floppy so yours could be a keeper.
