The climber was introduced the year I was born. I like the petticoat effect in the Kim's picture. It should have been a tea since it's so pretty seen upside down.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I grew both forms of her for many years in the Newhall garden and would still have the climber if room wasn't an issue. When my nephews were little and carving pumpkins was still beyond them, I would take over a bag of hips from Cl Winifred Coulter and we would use poster paint to paint on them so they could make mini jack'o lanterns. Not only are the hips quite large, they are also some of the most flavorful of any rose I have grown. Not they are really "good", but like those from Sharon's Delight, they do taste like a piece of ripening fruit.

Kim that sounds so fun. I bet if I have an Uncle making mini jack-o'-lanterns, then painting them.... Geezs, you will be my favorite for sure !
How is the scent ? I read it is a strong scent on HMF and it is a favorite of many Rosarians and yet I have never heard of it till now.
It definitely brings a smile looking at that rose upside-down.
Bella, you should get this rose since you are born in that year . I wish I can find just one rose with my year that would be so cool :)

Thanks, Jin. We had fun! It has a sweet scent, but it's how freely and continuously it flowers and that color that earn it its place. The individual flowers aren't all that full but there are SO many of them. A gentleman never asks a lady's age, so if you go to the Advanced Search tab on HMF, you can search via "Origin" for the year introduced. If you also add the particular class (s) you're interested in, you can narrow it down to a shorter list.

You're welcome, Jin! You're right, it does have a "flirt"! It's also on the shorter side and would be spectacular budded as a standard. I used it to create Quinceanera. Comtesse, I don't have any recollection of any differences between the two plant types other than physical plant size and associated mass of bloom. I grew the climber along a three and a half foot wire rabbit fence. It looked artificial with its wands of those ruffly, hot pink and white blooms. Both had flowers when I expected them to. Scent didn't go out of fashion. It never has. From searching out the odd, rare and unusual, it's been the better scented types which have hung around. Of course there have been exceptions and those were likely due to more limited distribution, but the decent growers with lovely flowers and good scent have been retained. Perhaps this may help? The money flows where we put it. If "we" didn't demand larger, showier, fancier colored blooms and more robust health, "they" wouldn't offer it.

I just came across this. My grandfather is the person who introduced this rose. The second story is much closer to the truth I heard growing up. https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/pl.php?n=11713%22&tab=32 The Coulter’s and van Barneveld’s were best friends - both being members of the Balboa Bay Club, etc. I do not believe that my grandparents had a home on Balboa Island though they spent alot of time there at the Coulter’s house.

I am currently looking for more of the ”bush” version as most of them died recently at my parent’s house. If anyone has any leads I’d apprecaite it.

@HU-305322959 how neat! I don't know where they obtained them, but Otto & Sons in Filmore, CA lists it currently in stock as a bud and bloom canned plant. Unfortunately, it isn't listed on the current list for the San Jose Heritage. Perhaps you might contact Otto and find out where they obtained it? They used to actually propagate some things and offer them in gallons to their wholesale accounts. I was surprised to go there and find one gallon Mutabilis plants and even more surprised to learn they rooted them. Good luck!
