I would need to see the whole space and wonder what you want to use them for. I would take them out they look like they are in an odd spot.

are the shelves removable? if they will be sparsely filled, you can paper the back of the cases, add a crown molding. a glossier paint to match the trim as kay suggests.

Do you need/use them? If not it would be probably be easier to remove than trying to make them look better, as they are now, they look inexpensively built.

They shelves have recently been cleared out. We were going to take out then had second thoughts ( hubby worried the walls would be damaged and need to be repaired)

You could put doors on them.

What era/style is your home? I can imagine the bookcase adding character to the room, if styled well. Also, you could add molding/trim if you want to change make them more substantial or formal.

What room is this? Kitchen? Family room? Den? Would it look better with a shelf going all the way across rather than 2 across, and then having less of them?

What room is this? Can you post more pictures of the room? Bookshelves can add so much to a space, that even though I’d like to see the room and know how you’d use it, my inclination is to keep them and style them with books, pictures, and objects. Good luck!
