It looks great!! Cool island. Love your backsplash and cabinets. What do you mean by "Switching cabinet to have the big portion be on the bottom is way more effective"? And what used to be above your stove?

Above the stove was a hood and nothing else...which was a waste! So we now have lots of cabinets and a nicer hood there.

If you look at the "Before" picture on left, the bottom cabinets went from floor to about 3 feet high. The top cabinets went from 38" to ceiling. We ended up putting lots of infrequently used items in the bottom because you had to bend down to open, harder to access, etc. The top ones were good from 38" to about 74" but the very top was hard to reach. So that left us with a problem of fitting all the frequently used plates, cookware and pantry items between 38" and 74". We didn't have enough space frankly. So, in the "After" we use the bottom 2"-70" for all that frequently used items/pantry. And the top cabinets get the infrequent items. @mona - Yes! The fridge makes me happy (my wife says I'm a little too protective). Btw, it's a Liebherr which I highly recommend as high quality, counter-depth, built-in look at price point below Sub-zero.

@sophie- Yes, moving the dishwasher made so much sense and allowed us to a pullout trash and cutting board cabinets where the dishwasher was. And yes, I need to ask our contractor to get us a matching toe kick!

Looks fantastic, and I love how changing the direction of the island makes such a big visual (and, undoubtedly, practical) difference. Did you do pullouts in the pantry cabinets?

@avatarwalt the only pullout is the trash/recycling next to the sink. unfortunately, the big cabinets are just 14" deep so pullouts aren't necessary.

Thanks Noah, that makes sense. Too bad they aren't deep from a storage standpoint, but 14" makes for easy access.

So much wonderful storage! Is there no way to add an outlet to the interior of one of the tall pantry cabs and put the microwave in there? There are some very small microwaves. If only to reheat or melt.

Great update! I love that the dishwasher and trash look to be the same with handle placement and all. I am jealous of the wall to ceiling (even at 14 deep ). Turning that island gave you folks a little more room which I am sure is welcome!
