Bathroom floor tile - which one do you like?

last modified: 6 years ago

Which tile do you like for a bathroom floor including a walk in curbless shower ? the shower will be 6 feet x 3 1/2 feet with glass tile walls in pale blue - the entire bathroom is 6 feet x 9 feet and will have a navy blue vanity with marble top & sink..

photo 1 is an 8 x 8 porcelain tile from turkey..

this one is recycled glass mosaic...

my bathroom plan.. shower 6 x 3 1/2 - 42 inch by 9 foot high glass panel and 30 inch open to walk in; 1 rainhead / 1 regular shower head / 1 handheld shower head / no niche & no bench / curved glass shelves in the corner for shampoo and stuff; bathroom is 9 feet wide - please don't laugh at my plan..

I like the variety of color in the 2nd one.

I prefer the first one. It’s busy, but not in ur face kind - like the second one.

They are both lovely, but I prefer the first one. Whatever you go with, please post after pics. It sounds like it's going to be wonderful!

The first tile looks dated in those colors The second tile might be too trendy. Why not use one of the porcelain marble hex tiles by MSI at wayfair.com. That's a more classic look with longevity.

I like both but prefer the first. How will it look in your bathroom with your other chosen elements though? I'd need to see the tile next to the glass tile, marble counter and vanity to be sure. Not sure the second option is a good match for the wall tile.

Porcelain tile is a popular choice for bathroom floors. Porcelain is a denser, less porous and harder option that offers greater stain and water resistance than glass mosaic tile.

Can you post a picture of the blue glass wall tile?

I like the first one better.

Are you building the room? Are any of the fixtures already there? If not, I'd move the toilet to the space between the sink and the shower. Then have the shower opening on the left side.

Those are NOT a good match of blue shades. That might be enough reason to pick #2...

I like the first one but it might be too large for a shower floor (not slip resistant enough). The second one is too trendy and too reminiscent of some awful fashions from the late '70s.

Fifamom, your wall tile doesn't look like a good match for the floor, but remember it will look different at 90°. When you compare tiles, hold them at their appropriate angles.

I would also be concerned about the slip resistance of those 8" square tiles.

How large are the individual tiles in #2? For the main room, I hope they are like 6", but for slippery issues in the shower, I hope they are 2" - 3" big! So I have schizophrenia when it comes to the tiles. Can you hold the wall tile vertically next to the #2 wall tile?

I really like both of Beth’s suggested palettes, depending on whether you want dark or light! Unfortunately, also not a fan of the dull gray-brown-blue of the wall tile compared next to your other choices :/

I am an outlier here, but I am afraid this overall look will be outdated rather quickly. So, I would go with more whites and use the darker colors for the floor to match/coordinate with the vanity. I also would add lighting that is cool for these colors. If you want more "action", add a wall of interesting wallpaper. Easier to change that out than a printed floor that goes into a shower.

I like the first one better. I think it would look stunning with a navy vanity. the 2nd one is a little too busy. almost dizzying.

I get tired of rooms surfaces looking so alike. so in a bathroom why not add a tasteful mix like the mosaic you posted? but less contrast on walls..cause navy vanity might have the drama...

The hex tiles look more updated in shape and color, but could be very busy - still very pretty. Good luck and definitely post pictures!

Thank you everyone.. i am partial to the 1st tile.. it really looks nice and would do the entire floor including shower.. i prefer it with a white tile on the shower walls / hubby prefers blue / designer likes blue too; we are still throwing around ideas and this room will get tiled mid january so i have a bit of time yet..

8" x 8" tiles on the shower floor are a slip waiting to happen. Please research the large format tiles, here's a tip from TCNA:

"The rating agency, The Tile Council of North America, states that according to the "ANSI A137.1–2012 standard, ceramic tiles selected for level interior spaces expected to be walked upon when wet must have a minimum wet DCOF AcuTest value of 0.42." Numbers can be deceptive, as some tile manufacturers still publish older ratings.

    • Incorrect: A manufacturer says that its tiles are rated at ≥ 0.60 wet. Because it is specified as the earlier SCOF rating, the tile is still reporting earlier guidelines for safety.
    • Correct: A manufacturer says that its tiles are rated at ≥ 0.42 wet. Because this is specified as the DCOF AcuTest, its wet ratings are using the current system.

This does not mean that ≥ 0.60 wet tiles are unsafe. It only means that they are up to spec to the earlier system. In fact, none of these ratings, current or past, address safety. They only list results of scientific testing and let you derive meaning from them." - The Spruce

I like the first tile but worry about the shower floor. Talk to the tiler before ordering the shower floor will need to slope towards a drain. The large size on the floor of the shower may not work well so check before you buy. Also I like the white tile for walls over the blue as you might have blue overload. What will be the wall color.

If you do a linear drain you can do a larger tile in the shower. We did the drain, but we still went with the mosaic on the shower floor.

Are you thinking of a linear drain? Do your homework on that. It requires more work and planning to get this right. Some complain of difficulty keeping the underpan clean so just think about that.

    fifamom thanked Flo Mangan

And no matter what drain you get, larger tiles IN the shower can become very slippery. Grout lines make for friction. Friction keeps you upright!

thank you everyone for your input.. we are going with the stratford tile on the shower walls.. and white hexagon mosaic on the floors throughout the bathroom.. both tiles are a matte finish - drain is a 4 inch square stainless (i don't like the linear drains) the shower floor is zero barrier.. no niches and no bench in the shower itself.. we will install glass shelves in the shower for soap and stuff and a small cedar bench.. 3 shower heads.. one rain head 20 inches from wall - one angled shower head and a handheld.. walls in the bathroom will be white or SW Crushed Ice.. Vanity will be blue (i have to order it) fixtures will be chrome..

Good deal. I wouldn’t put glass shelves in shower. Dangerous. If you get a teak bench many have lower shelfs for setting items. Should be very pretty. Hope you find a deeper blue vanity. That contrast will be very pleasing.

@ Flo Mangan - we will be using the thick tempered rounded glass shelves with brackets in the corner near shower heads - we are all adults in the house and they look better than niche and / or marble shelves..

The first one looks like vinyl and the second one, which I like better, is still too busy. I don't care for the flowers in the tile. I'd also have a built in shelf with room for shampoo, soap, etc. each shelf within this shelf should be deep enough for different products. I'd also build in a bench that's big enough to actually sit on. Add some non slide stuff to the bench. The suggestions above about the right color key is very important. I'd keep the tile simple, no pattern and put it on walls and floor. Paint ceiling white.

@Shanon Rosick - thanks for your post.. if you check my post from 9 hours ago we are going with the deco pattern stratford tile on the shower walls and a matte white mosaic on the entire bathroom floor.. walls are being painted crushed ice which is a hint of grey that picks up the tile color.. the tile doesn't look like vinyl in reality.. it is actually very pretty - no bench / no niche - i do not like either.. getting a small cedar bench in the bathroom that we can pull under the rainhead if we want and tempered curved glass shelves in corner..

here are more photos of the tile and pattern.. hubby picked it out and i love it.. just the right look I want for this bathroom (guest bathroom on the 1st floor)
