Dining into office

We are in the process of building our home. the floor plan is attached. i would like to make the dining room an office. the only problem i see is the entrance from the dining room into the kitchen. i don't want that opening to throw the office plan off. then i thought about them closing it completely off, but I don't want to do away with the opening all together because i may use it in the future.

What is wrong with the dining room connected to the kitchen? Why would that be a problem? That make's NO sense!!

People convert dining rooms to offices all the time and so what if there is an opening to the kitchen. My only thought is where are you going to eat? I am going to assume you are using all bedrooms because otherwise that makes a better office. Then I am feeling like your EIK is crowded for that many people eating.

As an aside - watch out for posters who will comment on your floor plan unrelated to your question.... Like why oh why do you want pedestal sinks in a J&J bathroom? You like clutter? Give me some drawers or give me death! And pocket doors there? Ouch.

Overall - the common areas are too dark. There is a townhouse type feel because the common areas only get light from one side and even that is shaded by the 2 bedrooms that protrude out further into the back.

If it is not too late, maybe you should create another thread asking for comments on the entire plan. I don't want to scare you, but there is A LOT of room for improvement.

Turn the dining area into an office? No problem.

Have you considered where you will eat meals for the next 20 years?

Agree - try to place furniture in your great room- there is a TON of traffic going through there to the entry, to the bedrooms, being able to use those double doors.

I am sure the plan says the great room is 17x18, roughly.

It's maybe 10x15 using that recess (are you planning built ins? It will then be less) The yellow are traffic areas you will need to keep clear of furniture.

To your original question - there's nothing wrong with leaving that door for circulation and you might even find it super convenient to have an easy path to the kitchen to get a glass of water or cup of coffee from the office.

That's going to be a really large office, though - and might look weird seeing it from the entry foyer unless it's kept super neat. Bedroom 4 looks like a better office than it does a bedroom - as it has challenging access to a bathroom. And it already only has one opening into the rest of the house.

How far into the process are you? Planning? Foundation/Slab in? Framing?

If you are designing the house, you could simply design it to not have a separate dining room, and to have an office. One doesn't have to become the other. (And then you could also take care of other issues like bedroom and bathroom approaches, odd placement of Bedroom 4, lack of a powder room which I'd expect in a house this size, to.)

just thinking about your question, though, I can't read the kitchen layout but what if the kitchen door were moved to the left, closer to the hall opening? And what is your office plan that you're worried the door will throw off?

Will the office be used as a daily work-from-home office, will you receive clients or customers there? What kind of work will be done, as in will there be a lot of mess, a lot of noise, does it need privacy?

An 11x11 room is not big enough for a dining room so you might as well make it an office. I would absolutely have doors so that one does not look into office mess (and most offices ARE messy, even mine and I'm a neat freak!).

This is a very small house into which a lot of rooms have been stuffed. I don't think it will "live well" at all.

It's 11'x15". Hard to read the numbers.

Where WILL you all eat? Island? The breakfast nook, which won't work for company?
