Dining area help

I am looking for some design help with my very small dining area. The space for the TABLE is 72" along the wall, from the single panel door (laundry room) left to the back of the sofa (open floor plan) and 122" to the kitchen. This does NOT include space/walkway from the laundry room door to the slider. Storage is the name of the game in this area. Everything in the room can go. Specific needs:

1. dining table. Even with our small space, we host dinners for 8-10 people regularly so an extension table is a must. I was thinking a 60"-72" table that extends to 90"+. This may seem big for the space but the table triples as a craft station for our 3 year old on the weekends and my work station during the day. We turn the table perpendicular to the slider when we host more than 6 people. Our interior style is fairly transitional and I would love a taper round leg table but have not found one that meets our requirements (including less than $1500). I am thinking the Mid CenturyTable Expandable Table from West Elm but am worried the style will stick out but I love the look of the table. I am totally stumped about chairs.

2. The space to the right of the slider. I want to replace the blue cabinet with something that will provide us with a little more counter space but not stick into the room. I am thinking an angle end base cabinet, that is counter height, painted in case I can't find a good match to the kitchen cabinets (maybe navy but I am up for suggestions) with faux feet to make it look like a stand alone cabinet and add a butcherblock top. And 2 or 3 shelves above the cabinet. Any thoughts? I would prefer something with doors for the base (less to dust).

3. To the left of the slider, I would like to put a few plants but am not sure if I will need more storage. A corner hutch is an option but the space may feel larger with an open corner. We will have cabinets in the laundry room for some additional storage.

Thanks for any input!

Could you provide a image showing the other side of table where you mentioned sofa open concept?

I will turn our current table and post pics. And will take pics of the living room tomorrow. Thanks.

    Table turned.

Open into very small living room. Let's not talk about the sofas. They are awful but my husband brought them into the house and is not giving them up (someday he will). Cellular shades are ordered for the window to take away the bulk of curtains close to tv and love seat. Thinking about a mirror above the mantle.

You need a round or square table with a leaf...that long table is not working at all..add a bench along back wall for table seating with added chairs....

Not sure if you like the style, but I recently learned about the Transformer Table for a somewhat similar situation and am intrigued with the concept - and the price point.

Iamtiramisu...that is amazing! Very interesting...only thing is where do you store all the extension pieces and extra chairs? if you are tight already on space and storage....I guess you could have extra folding chairs stored in a garage...price is very reasonable...great find.

Home Interiors with Ease - isn’t it?! I’m glad you think so too, I was pretty amazed when I checked it out after someone on a thread here mentioned it in another post. I wish I knew who that was so I could give them credit. I know, I thought about where to store the leaves and extra chairs too. For us in particular that isn’t a huge problem as we have space in closets or basement or garage as needed, but for others it may be. But given the price point and all the various length options it’s really hard to beat. I have been looking at extension tables all over the place and all either start out way too big for the normal/every day space and/or they don’t extend as long as we’d like or need for holiday meals. While this table isn’t necessarily the style I’d pick first or in the style of something I’d hoped to find, it’s simple enough to work and compromise the style I’d prefer under ideal circumstances for the function we really want/need. And at a very hard to beat price!!

Agree..I like the style personally and I think would work very well in Kim’s home..smaller modern midcentury chairs can be added for a clean modern look...the surface would hide scratches and everyday wear..sounds like a lot of action in her home!

I think adding a bench along the back wall would work great and allow more traffic space between table and kitchen..your light might have to be moved or staged over.....Chair suggestions...

I agree - and I don’t dislike it at all, just not what I had in mind when I started to search. But that’s about me and not about the OP, apologies for diverting to my situation. It is a simple and clean design that (for what it’s worth) I also think it would work well here and for all the various scenarios as there does indeed appear to be a lot of activity going on. Hopefully if not this one, she finds something else that fits the needs.

The Transformer Table is a neat idea but I don't particularly like the style. Finding the right sized table is tough.

Look at square tables that seat 8..2 folding chairs always can be added for large groups..

A bench should be along the wall and square table can be pushed against wall and when more than 6 seats are needed you pull it away from wall and expose the bench that seats 2 more....again if more than 8 needed add folding chairs...use smaller sized dining chairs for maximum seating when needed.

Can you hang the tv over that console and have your sofas facing eachother?

I'll look at square tables. Good reminder to look at smaller chairs, also regardless of table size.

How many do you have living in your home?

The wall to the right of the front door isn't quite wide enough for TV because of the light switch. I'm sure that can be moved but not in the plans right now. We've had the sofas facing each other but it makes the room seem even smaller. The other kinda TV option is over the fireplace but that's not ideal to me.

There are 4: me, my husband, 3 year old daughter, and lab mix dog. Someday there will be another kid (and that's when I start looking at real estate).

How many times a year do you need more seating than 4?

I really think you shouldn’t try to fit such a large table into your space...when we had family over and needed more space we added a folding table in our family room with 4 extra chairs just for dinner and than quickly removed it after dinner...I really think you should only worry about accommodating your family and not cramp the space you have.

You could do the West Elm 42” round table for 4....love this West Elm table seats 4 but because of the more pedestial style base 2 more small chairs could be added When having guests....it dies also come in 60” round...I have a 58” round in my 12’x12’ space.

Hmmm, back to the drawing board. I need to get out my tape and visualize a round table because I have only been looking at rectangular tables. We need seating for 4-6 adults at least a few times a month and seating up to 10 a couple times a year. I think we would have larger groups over more often if we had an accommodating set up.

Do you think solid wood tables tend to be more durable than veneer?

If you get a solid wood have a tempered glass top made for it...we did it when we had a full house of kids and friends just spray glass cleaner and wipe...protected it from scratches..when we moved almost 15 years later the table still looked like new and the new owners bought it from us...I do have a new round pedestal table from Hooker and the top is industructable! We absolutely love it! 58” round...fits 6 very comfortably and my chairs are 21” wide...this is 10-1/2 x 11’ space.

Would you ever consider getting rid of one of the sofas? Than you could put sofa in front of window and add two swivel chairs near the kitchen will give it a more open feel..and can turn for ease of viewing tv....and put the TV over that console / buffet you have opposite the fireplace.these are all under $300 each and would blend well with your sofa now and if you change it out in the future...both swivel...

I agree that two chairs to replace one of the sofas would open our space but I need to focus on more functional aspects of our house right now, like adding cabinetry in the laundry room, extending table, etc. There is a chance that we will move in the next 2-3 years so I imagine looking for new living room furniture then.

I've looked for round extension tables with no luck. I would love to find a round table with 2 leaves. My husband and I want to find something that extends to seat 10 people even if we only extend 4-6 times per year. Leaning towards the Seno table from Article because I am concerned about the quality of the westelm table and don't want to pay Room and Board prices.

Thinking an angle base cabinet for the end of the cabinets in our kitchen to keep the walkway open. White shaker? Another color? Try and match our maple shaker cabinets? Then put same cabinets in the laundry room, which is through the door in the dining area. The laundry room will have the same tile flooring as the kitchen.

Open shelves above the base cabinet. Plant on the left of the slider.

    Thoughts?

Or would a hutch next to the kitchen cabinets look better?
