Front door color

We have a light grey house with white trim. I have decided to paint my small front porch black as well as the window box. What is the best color for my front door? I was thinking red. Also the plastic molding around the front door window has yellowed. Is there a good way to get it back to white?

Hi Holly, Congrats on your remodel ! Your photo is nice because it shows the bigger picture, the surroundings.

If you could take a few more photos that are closer, that feature your front door more prominently, it could be very helpful. Perhaps you could stand around the entrance door mat, and take a few photos of the red-framed area ? -- :)

Red is a good choice. Another may be a green that works with the landscape. This was colour i used on client project similar colours to your home BM Stem Green

Hi Holly, the close up is nice -- will you be painting both the front door and the screen door ? And could you open the screen door to show the front door 100% in a photo ? :)

No just the interior front door. I'm toying with the idea of replacing the screen door.

Have you read this ideabook about painting doors? It suggests a deep red

Red Contrast by Dunn Edwards, DE A106. It's a beautiful red for a front door. I've always wanted a red door so when we had our house painted our painter recommended it out of about 6 different reds. I love it

Oh Holly- I made that mistake and painted my garage stairwell black and it always looks dirty. Yes, to the red door.

i agree, a charcoal grey would be great and the red...Talbot's red! we've painted many client doors that color!

not sure where you're located, but if you could go with a screen door that is more a FULL screen and shows more of your door, that would be great.

Hi Holly, it would be very helpful if you could open the screen door to show the front door 100% -- right now, the screen door is in the way.

The screen door should be painted as well I think. And I agree about not painting the steps black. A really dark charcoal grey would do the trick though.

My vote is for the Dignity Blue, although I like the red too. Agree the screen door should have a small frame. I think it should then be painted the same color as the door. The porch and window box a medium gray for some contrast to the house. As far as the white molding around the window on the door, that should also be painted the same color as the door, not outlining the window in white. Also, maybe a more substantial lamp next to the door in a dark gray, almost black metal.

Thanks, Ed! I'll have to play with that. It's great that you could change the color on just the inner door. Can't wait to see what happens! Door colors are fascinating! We take it so seriously, don't we?

Dignity Blue is my vote for the door color. You can also change the lantern lights to something more modern. The house number needs updating as well to complete the look.

What fun picking a new door color!
For the wood deck, consider this to avoid the black looking dirty quickly: Paint the railings and the stringers (side of porch and stairs) black. On the top of the steps and deck, paint in from the sides, leaving a "runner" in the middle. You could treat the "runner" with transparent stain or a stain color that will do a better job of blending with tracked in soil. Grab a handful of your yard dirt, dry it out and then take it to the paint store to get a match to your dirt. In most places it will be a taupe or grey color, but in some places it's orangey red (Georgia, I'm thinking of you!). You'll have to use an oil based paint, so that the oil stain doesn't cause the black paint to peel. A latex paint will probably react to oll based stains. Your paint store will have better knowledge of compatible products than I.
