Carrots: another I may try planting mixed with the lettuce. I absolutely fail at carrrots, but I'm determined to try again. Most of these are the not-orange variety. I have a whole collection of solar system varieties (lunar, cosmic, atomic, etc) so they're on my list, plus some short varieties.

Jen, I did the lettuce under tomatoes thing a couple years ago and it went gangbusters. Highly recommend the technique! When family would come over I would give them scissors and grocery bag and tell them to take as much as they could clip. I'll do it again this year if I can get the area worked in time. The only reason I didn't do it last year was because I had a black thumb when it came to lettuce for some reason.

In my opinion, lacinato kale is the best tasting. I'm sorry you have trouble with it Megan. One year in fall I planted a red/purple bed of plants in those colors. It was beautiful until the temps fell to single digits. EVERYTHING died except the scarlet kale. I left it and planted around it in spring hoping to get seeds. I don't think it ever flowered. So I am fond of Scarlet kale, too. I find the Russian kales tough, so I quit growing them. I am a sucker for new or different kale varieties, I will have a hard time choosing this year.
