My favorite orange is the Washington. I suggest your getting one on a dwarf rootstock since you are concerned about size. Four Winds Growers has them on semi-dwarf rootstock and different ages (3 year and 1 year) and Brite Leaf has them on dwarf rootstock on 1 year old trees. Both places have a good selection. I have ordered from both.

I love the cara cara oranges and even the blood ones even though they do not color up as much in our climate. The sanguinelli has an incredible flavor even without much color. I love mine.

You gals are killing me! Now I have to add some of these to my collection just based on the descriptions and if they are not acidic, time to let the fruits grow, an dif so I will share them. Thanks))

By the way, I too LOVE my washington navels, not for the fruit, but very prolific bloomers!

myermike, I had one small Washington tree give me at least a dozen fruits 2 years ago. They were so good that I had to get another one because I grow citrus in pots and they can only produce so many.

Maybe you should get a Minneola Tangelo.

(it also might do a little better in your cooler climate than an orange, and yes I realize this isn't going to be outside during the Winter)

I love the minneola, but it is a HUGE tree! I think mine is on c-35 and it is growing into the ceiling of my sunroom. It was nearly impossible to get through the door....my largest tree by far. The fruit are wonderful though. I like the tangy flavor of the tangelo, but others may prefer a sweeter citrus. I'll post a pic of mine so you guys can get a fee for the size.

Do you have FD seedlings. If so Grafting this tree will retain its size and increase fruiting at a small tree. Trees fruit heavily when the reach their terminal hight.

I really need smaller stuff, this is destined for indoors half the year, by October 1st I've learned to bring inside to avoid a whole bunch of insects ( I tried late autumn gardening under clotches etc and its like ringing a dinnerbell and your the only supermarket, no longer do it) with less shock, and not getting jammed up in time with the garden proper clean up etc conflicting

The only tree in my yard that is doing nothing is my Washington Orange! Everyone else is plugging away, flowering and fruiting merrily. This one just sits there. And I am surrounded by houses with overladen orange trees! I want another orange tree too!

If you want a sweeter version that still has some tangelo-like flavor, I would suggest a Page mandarin.

There were a couple of citrus collector experts in the Tropical Fruit citrus subforum who considered Page their favorite tasting variety out of all citrus.

I just picked a fruit off my Sumo/Dekopan/Shiranui tree and it tasted great. I have to be honest that I was a bit apprehensive because I wasn't sure it was ready as it was my very first one that I intentionally picked. A few fell off the tree when it was blown over by the wind. Anyway, one of these would be an asset to anybody's orchard.

Yes, Dekopon is a great fruit, but the flavor is a little too sweet and rich for my taste.

Flavor is more like a navel orange, maybe slightly in the direction of a sweet mandarin, doesn't really have a huge amount of tanginess or aroma. I almost sense a little bit of mango-like flavor. It's enjoyable, but for some reason just feels a little "rich" when I eat an entire fruit, like eating too much wouldn't sit the best in my stomach.

It would make a great fruit to pack in a sack lunch.

Has anyone tried a trovita. It is the easiest to sweeten an bust up acide for potted citrus trees that go indoors.

Steve, I’ve been on the fence for a long time about getting one of those. At this point, I think I will not only because I have enough trees ;) and many oranges that I like. I like the dekopon, but I prefer oranges to mandarins. I have a Washington (or maybe I gave it away?). I do like them, but navel oranges are easily found in stores (although often not as fresh). I prefer to grow the varieties that are not as easy to find.
