Main spring bloom is only produced by overwintering buds developed the previous year. However some bloom may sometimes be seen on new growth during the summer, as with garden hybrids of Magnolia liliiflora. However same also as with the magnolias any such produced by wisterias are scattered among the summer leaves, where they do not show as well as when the plants are bare or mostly so in spring.
