Which arrangement do you prefer?

I wanted to try something different. We do love our sectional for comfort & everyone being able to watch movies while lying down. This is our main room- living/family/media in one.

i stole the chairs from the kitchen side of the FP. And they need new slipcovers.

Full sectional

Vs 2 chairs

View as you enter from front doors

Thanks!

I think I prefer the look of the 2 chairs & prefer the comfort, but not looks of the sectional! Grrrrrr

I was going to say exactly what you said. The look with the two chairs is great, but I don't know about the functionality. It depends on whether the room is used more for visiting or for TV viewing, and if the latter, how many people typically viewing at one time.

Those chairs don't by chance swivel, do they? If so, they could actually be quite comfortable for TV viewing if you add some footstools.

A third vote for love the look, but it depends on how it works : ) . I'd give it a try and see what everyone in the family thinks.

Always a treat to see your house, Peppa!

I'd like the sectional for the winter because it looks cozy, but the chairs would be nice for summer because they look lighter and afford a view out of the lower part of the windows/doors behind them.

Ok, I do not like sectionals at all and I much prefer extra individual seating along with a sofa or loveseat. I also like sitting in my own space and have a chair to myself.... BUT....I have to say that I LOVE the way your sectional looks here and like another poster mentioned, I have never said that before! It’s amazing, but I really like the sectional and don’t care for the chairs at all.

I was hoping for a strong yay/nay!!! Lol

The chairs do swivel & I need some leopard foot stools!!! And I agree about winter/summer, too. It’s a gray rainy day here & the chairs seem to bring in more light.

This is an old pic- bookshelves are now painted......but I hate seeing the back of the sectional from the front doors. And I have a long console table on the long part of sectional.

Anyone have any ideas for this?

You can see I was experimenting with a round entry table here.

I also found this antique console the other day....

Honestly I prefer the look of the sectional from the front door much more than the chairs, table, cord etc. And the view from the other direction looking towards the front door is more appealing to me with the sectional as well. I don't dislike the chairs there but like the sectional more.

I’m not normally a sectional person but really like it in your room. To me the chairs are nice but something doesn’t work about them. Maybe beefier would be better? Don’t know, it’s a big room.

I love love love your ceilings!!! Your whole house is just stunning.

I don't think I have ever posted a true LIKE for a sectional. But, damn, I LIKE that sectional in your room :) That room seems to WANT a big sectional/couch.

Most sectionals I see are in rooms/homes not built to accommodate such a HUGE piece. Yours it appears is. Both of your options are nice. I think you could do better than white slip covers. When you have a gathering that is more friends than family--how many sit on the sectional? I don't often see three on a couch so am wondering if you find people choose to sit between, with no arm rest?

Your space is perfect for a sectional and the way you have it placed. Beautiful room. I can see another chair to the right of the fireplace should you decide to put one there.

Our best friends came over last night f dinner & a movie. The chairs were quickly dismissed & the sectional was put back together.

It does make me feel better that most of you (and strong sectional haters included!!) prefer the sectional. Ha

We entertain very casually & weather permitting- we are usually on the patio or around the fire pit.

I do have this little vintage chair I pull in when we have company.

Yes, I still have wreaths & garland!!

Here is the “entryway“- the back of the sectional bothers me.

    For reference- it’s a 8x10 rug.

    Any ideas for this space?

Id love some type of table to place plants in the southern windows. Maybe a couple of stools.

Here is is the console table on the long part of sectional

    Thanks!!

ACLB- the drapes are Ikea ritva. There are 2 panels on each side. And man who alters clothes hemmed, added lining & weighted corners.

Shee- I ordered from Dekowe on Etsy. Pillows are the only way I was gonna get some Peter Dunham fabric & I still had to save for them!!! Lol and mixed with PB outlet too.

    (Not A PRO)

your home is absolutely gorgeous! I like both variations but it's been determined that the sectional functions best. What if you take your long console table and move it to the back of sectional facing front door? Then you would define the entry more and not be looking at the back of a sofa. I understand why you don't like that a to be the view entering your home.

And while lovely, I think the 8x10 rug is too large by the front door. I"d move it elsewhere and try out a smaller rug just in front of the door.....a 5x7 or so.

I like the look of the sectional without chairs, if it works functionally for you. Beautiful home!

Hmmm. I think rather than another console table, I would try a long, shallow bookshelf on that side of the sofa. But then, I'm always looking for space for another bookshelf, so I'm biased. Your home is gorgeous!

Your home is absolutely stunning! I don't mind the look of sectionals, but I don't like sitting on them, maybe because my legs are short and I like to be next to an arm and end table. If I laid down every time I watched a movie, I'd sleep through all of them. How do you guys all stay awake? :)

I have Ritva curtains throughout my house and I love them. You can't beat the price either.

Instead of stools for the plants, how about a bench? I don't have a green thumb so no clue what's best for those green suckers. :) But in case you don't want anything too high there, a bench might be an option.

How much traffic does that area get? Is there enough room for a small reading area or if you play games a small games table?

Another vote for the sectional here. As someone above mentioned I found the two chairs was a little off - maybe messy or maybe poor scale compared to the sectional - not sure.

    Thank you all!!

Bunny, I know the accent chairs in there aren't perfect -but I think about my mom having difficulty getting up from deep seating-so I like to have other options.

I like the idea of a bench back there. Or switching the console table.

I saved this picture awhile back &could put this where the console table was?

It would provide another place to sit/play game closer to the pool table area?

Kinda incorporates all of your suggestions......

The round table by the sofa kind of reminds me of Maura Endres's set-up in her living room, though I think where she has the round table there are two chairs rather than a sofa (behind the sofa is a squarish marble-top table).

Do you already have the table, Peppa?

Since my DS has friends over— I put them to work for me!!!

Nothing is accessorized- just playing around. Probably not these chairs- maybe some cool antique or slip covered parsons chairs?

And another option......felt like the console table was too big

I think they all look great. Which works best for what you need?

Like them all. Think I prefer seeing the chairs facing the pool table though because it makes more sense to me than facing the door. BUT...the chair could maybe serve as a seating area for shoes. I'm guessing you probably use a side entrance though. I think I remember you had a post at one point about furniture for that area.

    last modified: 7 years ago

I like them both but prefer the table without the chairs for the more streamlined look. However I do like the idea of a place for a guest to sit if needed or casually drop a purse..... A bench with a back roughly the same size as the table might work to server the same visual and seating purposes. You don't happen to have one of those hanging around to try do you?!

I'm not sure which one I prefer!!

Having more seating by the pool table makes more sense, but I think the console table is overwhelming in the entry.

And we do use the patio & back doors a lot more.

DLM, I'm not understanding? 2 stools?

I definitely don't prefer these chairs with the table -too high, too busy. If I do chairs, I'd like to find some that sit below the top of the couch-like in the picture. I'm hoping I can find something antique-since they are usually much smaller/shorter.

Thanks for hanging with me &Amy decorating mania!! It only happens a few times a year:)

The bureau we see in that last pic under the gallery wall - would it fit behind the sectional in the entry area? I can't tell how tall or deep it is.

I also would try the console table in that area, without the storage baskets. I don't think the table looks too large but the baskets increase the mass a bit too much.

Sorry Peppa I'm on my phone (no internet due to ice storm) so looking at smallish pics and making typos. What I meant was a single bench facing the front entry. A bench with a back that is about the same height as the table, instead of, not in addition to the table. Does that make more sense? A backless bench won't work in my opinion. But a wooden bench with a back facing the front door gives a place for someone to sit and take shoes or boots on or off as needed, if your weather requires that.

    last modified: 7 years ago

Maybe instead of 2 baskets under the long table 2 square smaller in width storage hassocks or foot stools would work. Beautiful space!

The chair that you mentioned way up thread that you bring in for extra seating (it's to the right of the fireplace) - would that work beside the drop-leaf table? And then maybe a similar one on the other side?

Lordy I have reached the age when a chair from my youth is "vintage!" There is some comfort in knowing it was a tad old when I was young. It was in our large front hall. Not sure what happened to it, but I think it may have bee sold when my folks downsized.

I pinkmountain— I’m getting to be vintage too!! Compared to today’s furniture size- this chair is like a doll house chair!!

DLM— I do have a bench with a back & I’ll try that up there.

And I’ll try the other options mentioned.

Right now I’ve taken away the DR chairs & am not opposed to just the table. Its a drop leaf table so can open up for extra dining space there or as a game/puzzle table. I think I’ll be able to find some antique chairs/stools since most older furniture is smaller scaled & will maybe bring some interest there.

Thanks all for the help & compliments:)

It's a good sized, versatile space. I like your options for games, puzzles or overflow dining if you have a large crowd. If the table isn't precious or is adequately protected, it can be a drink/bar area to greet guests if you have a big party.

You have a beautiful, large room and I'm still studying the photos getting my bearings. Do you want to keep the sectional where it is because of TV viewing & fireplace?

I vote a solid yes for the sectional. It suits the room and looks so inviting. I prefer coziness over style, give me a room I can feel cozy in and I'm sold.

Yes, great idea on a drinks table for parties- keep the circulation going.

Yes- the placement works for both the TV & FP. My spot is the chaise by the FP- especially in winter.

I hate to keep updating this with pictures, but want you to know I’m open to the advice given. I’m such a symmetrical person & think it makes for a little bit of a bore & expectatio. I’m liking the little chair by the table, so thanks for the idea!

    Thank you all:)

So, in the “give a moose a muffin “ style of decorating I seem to do.....

I got this wingback from MIL today. She needed a clear path for her walker & this chair was blocking the path.

Thinking it stands with the FP better than the smaller slip covered chair that was a placeholder. Best of all = free!!!

What a gorgeous splash of blue for your room and I believe you have a couple of blue lamps that will all tie-in together. I'm sorry your MIL needs a walker.

Looks great Peppa! Did you move it? :)

Would you mind sharing how tall you blue and white lamp

om the square side table is? I’m having some lamps made and I’m debating about the one. Concerned it may be too tall so I’ve been going around trying to guess lamp heights. :)

(Side note -I know there are other factors besides just the height of a lamp when deciding where to use it.)

Blfenton, thanks!! My MIL is the original blue &white person ! She has always decorated with it & I've been incorporating some of her stuff with mine. Hopefully, she will get off the walker. UTI's in the elderly really do a number on them:(

Shee, this lamp was made from one of MIL's vases. It's 28" tall. They hand painted the prettiest finial to match the designs on the vase:). I saw something about lamps recently....... lamp/lampshade proportions should be 60%base &40% shade for height. And the shade should be 50% bigger than lamp base for width of shade. I'm also thinking Laurel Bern did a post recently about lamps-she's such a great resource!!

Also, I was at home goods, Marshalls, TJ Max after the holidays &they all had some really pretty blue/white Ralph Lauren lamps--worth a look.

    last modified: 7 years ago

Thanks Peppa! I thought It was a converted vase and did notice and wonder where you found the finial.

Thanks for the info. on proportions. I enjoy reading Laurel’s site so will check that out. There have been a few lamps in the past where I bought the lamp second hand and couldn’t seem to get the shade right. I got rid of the lamps eventually and vowed to never bring home another shadeless lamp again! Buuuut now I want to turn a baluster into a lamp so I’ll have to figure it out. :)

I’ll have to check those stores. It’s a real hit or miss here.
