Grevillea dieback / rejuvenation pruning?

My Grevillea lanigera "coastal gem" has become lanky and unattractive, with healthy growth only at the ends of its branches and is bare and leafless towards the center. It's a low-growing groundcover variety, so those bare branches are totally visible and quite unattractive. Does this indicate a particular problem, like with drainage, sunlight, etc.? And if I cut it back hard (i.e., cut off some of the bare branches) will it regrow?
