For some reason when I look at these pics it seems that the room looks bigger to me... .....but ...it isn't big.

Why a chalkboard? Do you need to write messages to someone? If not, then no.

The first thing I'd do is trash the 'gather' sign. It's pointless décor store clutter from some Chinese sweatshop.

Put things in there that are meaningful to you--that say something about you and your life. There's nothing personal there; it's all just stuff.

I'm not a fan of the signs/words on walls trend anyway, but "gather" seems an especially inappropriate message in a tiny room where people, presumably, really can't gather. Art and lamps.

How would a chalkboard contribute to a quiet space?

The room is already too busy to serve as a "quiet sitting room." Remove the ladder and the bench. The ladder is busy and the bench doesn't suit the farmhouse vibe. Will the buffet fit between the windows? Try it there with the chairs opposite. If it doesn't fit, flank it with the chairs in its present location so the windows aren't so blocked. Can the buffet be tricked out to replace your wine cart? Remove the busy shelf, sign and decor. Replace the mirror with art and use the colors from it to add a cozy rug. If you still have room with just the 2 chairs and buffet, think about a small backless settee or loveseat. You do need a table where people can set things? Please don't add any more shiplap; the lines make for more busyness!

Raise the dining light so it doesn't hit anyone on the head.

Hey tatts! By the way...you ask why I would need a chalkboard? You poke fun and say "do you need to write messages to someone? " I would have a chalkboard to write to you: in regards to your nonsense unprofessional advice regarding "pointless décor store clutter from some Chinese sweatshop."....yeah that one! I made that myself !!. Dont be so judgmental. And if we are ....then next time I will specifically ask the advice of a professional designer....not some alien who calls themselves "tatts"! ☺

I still hate signs like that, (and only in part because they mostly come from Chinese sweatshops) but I apologize.

I do think the room needs more personalization to make it cozy and welcoming.

What a fun room. I think it would be a great reading room. I'd put the gather sign in your dining/kitchen area. That's where mine is ; ).
