Help with sinks...

last modified: 7 years ago

I am having a hard time selecting my sinks. I am starting my remodel this week. We will have a U shaped kitchen with a large island with wood countertop. Range is on the middle section, sink is on side section and I will have an island sink at end of island where the range is. I am putting in a 36 inch Whitehaven Apron front sink for main sink. My question is would it look ok to use a 24 inch apron front sink in the island (same sink but smaller size as main sink). Or do an undermount sink? I was thinking the apron front sink might help with water and help protect the wood?

What do you think??

Not sure what you mean by middle and side section - are these sections of the island? We need a diagram of your kitchen...

I love my Whitehaven and I agree the way it extends out does protect the cabinet. I do not have a prep sink, but if your kitchen island is large enough to handle it and you have the budget, it would be fine. I really like how close I am to my sink and if the prep sink will be used often, there will be that same advantage - especially if you are short like me (5'1"). I do have the grills for my Whitehaven and they really help keep it looking good.

Sammie I mean that the kitchen is shaped like a letter U, with the island in the middle. The range is in the middle section of the letter U. Sink is on the side of the letter U. The island is in the middle separate from the U but inside of it, with the prep sink at the end of the rectangle island near the range and the main sink. Hope that is easier to understand?

jhmarie Thanks for sharing your experience wit the Whitehaven. I too am don the short side so good to know that it works well for you! I'm worried that the 2 fronts might be too busy?

What are the dimensions of the island? If the end of the island is narrow an apron sink will look strange.

Hi Nancy. Our island will be 5 feet x 10 feet. I was thinking of a 24 inch sink. Either apron front or under mount. Was just thinking it might help protect the wood counter top better with an apron front.

Patricia Our island sink will be about 5 feet away from our main sink, and between our range and refrigerator. I'm not sure how far apart sinks should be??

Does any one have pictures of the an island with an apron sink and a main apron sink? I haven't been able to find any. Is that because it looks bad?? Or there aren't any pictures? My husband likes the idea of them matching.. so that's probably the way we will go.

We will have a U shaped kitchen with a large island with wood countertop.

In general, I love "U"s, but do you have the option of changing this? A U-shaped kitchen's greatest strength is that it allows a single cook to reach everything in the "U" without walking much (as such, a "U" shouldn't need a prep sink). An island inside the "U" steals this strength and creates a Pac-man kitchen.

My question is would it look ok to use a 24 inch apron front sink in the island (same sink but smaller size as main sink). Or do an undermount sink? I was thinking the apron front sink might help with water and help protect the wood?

    No on three counts:

    - You're talking about your main sink being only 24". That makes washing large pots difficult. I suggest you enlarge this main sink and ditch the idea of a prep sink.

    - Two mismatched sinks are going to come out looking odd ... and an apron and an undermount are about as different as you can get.

    - Sinks + wood = trouble ... maybe sooner, maybe later, but eventually and for sure. The details of the sink don't matter. Water wins. Every single time. Someone will be sloppy and allow a puddle to stand, or you'll say, "I know the counter's due for a waterproofing, but I just can't do it." Water wins.

Sammie I mean that the kitchen is shaped like a letter U .... Hope that is easier to understand?

I think everyone knows what a "U" is, but a drawing would be useful. We don't have a concept of whether this is a large or small "U", a deep or square "U".

jhmarie Thanks for sharing your experience wit the Whitehaven. I too am don the short side

I'm short too, and I like that an apron sink is definitely /surprisingly easier for me to reach into.

Mrs Pete. Our kitchen is a deep rectangle. 20 feet x 22 feet x 20 feet. At the far wall (22 foot wall) is where the door way is to the dining room. The rest of the kitchen is open to the family room. Our main sink will be a 36 inch Whitehaven. I’m putting a 24 inch sink in the island. My husband helps in the kitchen often and so do my kids (17, 15, 13 and 12) So we usually have multiple people in the kitchen at once. I have mocked up the layout and think it flows pretty good for what we have to work with. I don’t have any drawings so just trying to explain the lay out.

So what you are saying is that I should go with both apron front sinks?

Sounds like you have a very busy household, so if there's room, I would add the second sink. There's many old threads on here discussing wood tops with sinks. Waterlox is a product that many have used with success. Each sink has their own function so they do not have to match, especially if your Whitehaven is a focal point. Here's my 36" Whitehaven with a 30" prep sink. I love the ease of prepping over this sink. Even with the cutting board in place, I still have enough room to drain a pot or clean my prep tools as I go. We've also filled it with ice and beverages and used it as a BBQ serving station with carving boards that fit on either ledge. Super functional and great for keeping mess off of the counters.

Wilson Is your prep sink a Riverby? And is your faucet an Artifacts? I was considering the Riverby in cast iron before thinking about the Whitehaven for the island sink. What a great idea to fill with ice!! And your kitchen is absolutely beautiful!! Thank you.

Thanks for the compliment! It is a Highpoint stainless sink that I purchased from Overstock. I have seen it badged under the Nantucket and Houzer names as well.

Some people don't like zero radius corners, but it is no issue for us. And yes, that is the shorter Artifacts faucet. I like it very much. The soap dispenser is Westbrass. I keep flexible cutting mats in a drawer next to the sink that I use over the white board so I can easily go from prepping meat to vegetables. I was just cutting a very crusty artisan loaf of bread over the sink and you know what a mess that can make when you do that on a counter - now all those crumbs go right in the sink.
