Bilbergia ID, please

I got some bilbergia pups from a friend. They are not B. nutans, but they resemble them. This is the only one that was blooming, and it's not completely open, but this is all I have. The bracts are much deeper and brighter red than shown in the pictures.

The leaves are exactly like a B. nutans, but the flower bracts are bright red, and the flower stalk is much shorter. I had one like it before, and it definitely isn't B. nutans, unless it's some variety I've never seen. The flower stalks seem to also be held more upright than the B. nutans and the flower stem itself is much more compact.

I found a picture of B. Bucholtzii that looks just like it, but I read that it's probably extinct? Maybe just extinct in its natural habitat?

Hi everyone.

Dirtygardener - It's almost impossible to ID a plant without seeing the open flowers, so another picture when the flowers open may be of some help.

The fact that you say, "They are not Billbergia nutans, but they resemble them" leads me to suspect your plant maybe a hybrid of Billbergia nutans; i.e. Billbergia nutans maybe one of its parents.

If your plant is a hybrid of Billbergia nutans this makes it a bit awkward to identify your plant as there are 55 registered different hybrids from Billbergia nutans and probably many more that aren't registered.

All I can suggest is that you go to the following link which is the BCR site of Bill nutan's hybrids

Here you will find all of the registered hybrids and most have accompanying pictures from which you may find a match with your plant.

Thanks. I know there are a lot of hybrids, so I think I'm just going to give up on trying to find an ID and enjoy it for what it is.
