Can you keep any green plants going from spring thru summer? My doorstep tuberous begonia didn't do much this summer but I hung onto it and I'm finally getting some very welcome flowers now.

Not much light at all in the room but maybe something else. Was thinking more of art

I like looking at what's on offer at minted. Prices are reasonable for the prints. Commissions are available, though. Maybe they'll have something that will appeal to you.

In my opinion, it's beneficial to view art in person if seriously considering purchasing an original. Perhaps you could schedule a day to visit galleries or art school sales in town. Could be a fun day trip.

If the mantle or beam above have electricity, run some light strips from one end to the other, hidden by a piece of wood trim. Then add bright non-pastel vases or a non-fou-fou collection you happen to have already. The photos show some other lighting ideas, from below and behind. The Chihuly-esque ceiling display shows how backlighting works.

I would declutte FP and mantle.

I think something similar to celerygirl's example above with the prints lined up could work with your long mantel. Maybe some botanical prints for Spring/Summer. Yes, as celerygirl's suggested, removing some items would help. Mantels and hearths look best when kept simple.
