Beach sand has rounded edges on the particles.

It packs.

It is NOT horticultural sand.

Thanks guys, I have some river rocks that I am just going to use instead and mix it with some perlite and cactus and succulent store bought mix and see how it goes.

The other problem with beach sand is that it can contain shell particles and this will make the soil alkaline and calciferous. Most succulents will not appreciate this, unless your plants are native to coastal habitats,

...and it is usually too salty...

Horticultural sand is not beach sand, but both really should be avoided if your idea of sand is very small particles. Get the bigger stuff and your plants will like it, but otherwise avoid it like pot without a drain hole.

Look for Play Sand. It's what's used in sand boxes and I've mixed it with potting soil before for succulents. Just make sure the potting soil isn't mostly peat moss, like Miracle Gro. I use a cheaper brand from Lowe's that is mostly bark and mixes well with the sand.

In my experience, play sand is too fine. It usually packs very well that is great to build sandcastles, but not for succulents. Maybe your experience if different...Most advice here is not to use sand - small grit works best.
