What's the architectural style of your house? Should that have something to do with these designs?

Virgil- We have considered the style of our home. And this is a kids room, so feel comfortable going a little more funky than in the public spaces. And we will be sure that flooring goes in before the built ins so should we ever want to remove them, it won’t be the worst thing.

Well...not sure why one would want a room with built-ins which are not in keeping with the architectural style of the house.

Perhaps, the realtor can come up with an appealing way to describe "funky" when it's time for resale.

You sure know how to say things to make people feel poorly. I am just looking for pics of cool built in ideas. Feel free to ignore my post instead of continuing to talk about architecture or how my house will not sell.

You can build a unit and put wall connectors to prevent kids from pulling unit down on themselves. Ikea carries them and Amazon. That way you can remove and move it to keep your options open. I see no reason to not do a hack of a standard Ikea unit unless you are ok with spending a good bit of money. But do a fun look for sure.

I know you weren't really thinking traditional, but something like this with doors on the bottom, might also give your daughter some closed storage if that's a concern. You could jazz it up with some fun wallpaper on the back. As noted above, could be done with ikea pieces and some trim.

A few concepts.

This isn’t real funky but it’s different than standard built ins. I did this in our family room. (We moved in about 6 weeks ago and I’m just beginning to think about styling these! So I don’t have a pretty pic to post yet. )

I have seen a few window benches where instead of storage beneath, they pull out into bed for sleepovers. Very cool for kids, but hidden function that you'd never guess. Depends how much width you have

For built ins, personally I try to avoid large aftermarket bookshelves... Have to awkwardly strap them to the wall so they don't tip over. Why not do a more plain/traditional bookshelf over a cabinet, and then have the funkiness be a bold color or the items themselves stored on it? Sometimes less is more (without seeing the room and more of your home)

Wysmama, my apologies. In my post above I was simply trying to point out the value and importance of architectural consistency in a home, and that good architectural design is a learning opportunity for children (since design and architecture are not taught in the educational systems), as well as the value it has if resale is considered.

I agree with Patricia CC that a child's room should reflect what the child likes. However, built-ins are expensive and permanent (well to a certain degree) and should not be subject to a child's particular likes at the moment which in my experience are quite fickle. I agree with Virgil that it should be consistent with the overall architectural style of the house. The child can then decorate and style the built-ins anyway he/she wants (within reason of course).
