Cabbage root fly would not be attracted to amaryllis. They only go for brassicaceae. If you say where in the world you are situated and whether these bulbs are indoors or out, maybe someone can identify the culprit. A photo of one would also help. My guess with no other evidence is narcissus fly.

I’m in Los Angeles. The other guess I had was narcissus fly or dark wing Gnat. I will get a picture when I go dig up the bulbs again to see if any new ones were infected but they are smaller whitish yellow maggots Maybe only a centimeter usually.

Thank you so much! I think it is In fact fungus gnats. I un potted all my bulbs today and saw the adults crawling and flying on the pots. I’ll have to look into Dominion L2 unfortunately since all the roots come from the basal disk many bulbs don’t have roots but if it keeps the adults from laying eggs and the eggs from hatching then I’m sure they will recover with time

Yes, looks like fungus gnats that feed on dead organic matter and roots when available, but your bulb is fully recoverable. One soil drench of a good systemic insecticide will keep them away for months. I got my Dominion 2L from Amazon.

The active ingredient in Dominion 2L is Imidacloprid, could I just other products With the same active ingredient for the same effect ?

Actually, a simple dilute solution of 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide to 3 parts water and flushing the roots and soil mix thoroughly will achieve the same results and without the environmentally damaging side effects of the imidacloprid. This method is used frequently by houseplant growers to control fungus gnat larvae. You will still need to get rid of the adult gnats but sticky traps are effective for that. And you would have do the same thing with any purchased systemic - they will not work on the adult gnats

Also a more textural, less water retentive soil mix will go a long way in curbing these pests. They seem to thrive in any peat based potting mix!!

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like hydrogen peroxide was effective against the larva at all. That was the first thing I tried. Im going to increase the amount of clay and sand in my soil to help deter them in the future but i think having a systemic insectifide in the soil will be beneficial for long term recovery as the bulbs have been taking a beating for a while. But I am going to avoid all peat in the future

Jonathan, I'm sure any brand using Imidacloprid should work. Be sure to read directions for proper dilution.
