Small Dining Room

I am moving into a rental house that I am trying to make feel like a home. The dining room is very small, and I'm trying to find a way to make it look nice without emptying my whole wallet. We aren't going to have more than a few guests over to eat, but I wish we could find a way to add a couple more seats.

A rectangular table and two additional complimentary chairs for the ends of the table.

The room might be too small for a rectangle table. Do you think a corner bench seat instead of two chairs might work with the round table?

Benches don’t work with round tables. Someone ends up sitting too far from the table to eat comfortably.

I wouldn't put a bench seat in front of a floor radiator and no matter what you do, the round table fits only 4 seats.

Is there another room that could be used for the dining room?

Can you please give the dimensions of the room? Thanks.

If it's a rental, look for something simple, you never know what your next space will be. A parson style never go out of style either. Look for one on craigslist.

I do not know the dimensions of the room, off the top of my head. We are moving in early February.

Based on the chairs I see at the table, I am going to guess that is a 30" table. You should be able to fit a rectangular table in there and have much more seating. Please don't buy anything, though, until you get the dimensions.

So you're bringing your own furniture? What do you have?

My guess is your room is 10x12?

We don't have anything yet, but my guess is we might buy the hutch in the picture from the landlord

What about Ikea for a table? They tend to be on the skinnier side...

And there's these from Amazon, which I think are very nice for a set of two...https://www.amazon.com/YEEFY-Classic-Fabric-Dining-Chairs/dp/B077GLM2B1/ref=sr_1_102_sspa?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1548804917&sr=1-102-spons&keywords=chairs&th=1

They also have it in a set of four for 140.

Reviews say that they're slim, so you would fit four for sure..

If the Ikea tables are pricey, you could look on Craigslist for a table...

My assumption is that you really don't want to spend much on a room that you won't be in too often, plus as was mentioned your setup may be different in the next house.

Unless you need the hutch, I don't suggest buying it. It looks awkward shoved on one side of the wall. (currently a necessity because of the vent). You'd be better off with a console table there or a hutch with high legs.

We think a rectangle table might work as well. Here are some of our designs to help you with rectangle table ideas:

If your landlord charges you more than 75 bucks for the hutch, tell him no.

Look on craigslist and find some better deals.

while you're looking, see if you can find those solid oak round tables w/a leaf. I found one on there for $15. I refinished the oak top and painted the rest in black (ball and talon feet) and it looked beautiful.

Can you paint the walls a lighter color? soft creamy white? Then you could bring in a nice colorful rug with a pattern.

Lot of options which can be found on Craigslist or IKEA or similar spots. A round table with an insert, a square table with an insert, an oval table, or even a small rectangular table with a slide out section. I have a square table that has leaves tucked under it that slide out on either end for larger gatherings. One could slide out one or two leaves. Such flexible tables exist and can be found pretty cheaply sometimes when folks are moving, etc. I got my table years ago at a Home Goods store.
