As soon as I get out of my apartment I wanna try something like this if possible. Not as big and a little bit more passive. I like some of the ideas i've seen, specially the guy who was growing bananas at over 7000ft in colorado.

The idea: insulation on three sides, partially dug in greenhouse 4 foot deep with a foundation but only on the sides, black water barrels to collect heat during the day.

Not sure it would work in zone 4b but I can't see why I couldn't push my zone to at least zone 7b with this. It opens up the possibility to have pomegranates, peaches and some more interesting grape varieties, even arctic kiwis. Who knows, maybe even satsumas are possible, ohh how we would love this.

Kevin, I think you're referring to Joel Osentowski. His book is the best I've seen on greenhouses, and what he does with his climate battery design is totally possible in zone 4. Below is his website...

Read up, for fun and knowledge, on Walipini- the precursor to modern earth sheltered greenhouses. The name comes from Bolivia who are credited with being the first to invent this concept. You can download his original publication from the link above. It has since been improved upon with modern technology and materials. To me it is one of the most interesting concept in greenhouse design.

Poncirusguy, after I watched the video I was wondering if you had dug down to make your greenhouse.

I dug out the clay between my house and detached gage 6 feet deep and filled with compost 4 foot deep The compost settle to about 3 feet and planted 3 trees . Layed out cross beams from house to garage and covered with 2 sheets of glass and 1 layer of bubble wrap. Glassed in ends. Tree is to big now.

Bottom 3 feet insulated 360 around. north side insulated to top. south side 5 layers of plain glass east and west side 4 layers of low-E insulate glass. 0-F safe with 23+13+13 watt CFL day light bulbs.
