I don't know what zone you're in, so I can only speak to what has worked for me in 9b/10a and here in 9a.

I always try to do my transplanting in February, when plants are not growing and can put their energy into making new roots. Ideally, you would have transplanted them in October, so they could have to recover during the winter, but now is o.k. because once the weather warms, they'll start growing and putting out roots faster.

If they are very large bushes, cut them back by half before transplanting. If you have space, root some of the cuttings just in case one or two don't take. Crotons are easy to root. You can try not cutting them back, but in my experience, the rootball after digging can't support the entire canopy and the bush may die.

I've dug large crotons and put them into containers, and they came back very quickly.

I am in Central Florida (I thought Winter Springs used to show up in my username line) and your advice is helpful for me here. I will probably do the transplanting this week and now I’m comfortable knowing it’s the best time for the plants.
