living room help

Hello all, I've really been wanting to redecorate my living room for a while to make it look homier. Do you guys have any suggestions on how I could place my furniture and maybe do wall decor? I'd love to add a coffee table and a new accent chair. things that must stay include my sofa, tv stand and shelf for toys. any suggestions would be wonderful! I'm really loving the mid century modern style at the moment.

Start by getting your seating off the walls and onto the rug. I would paint. That color is more exciting than homey. Then your art needs to be rehung; it's all too high and random on the walls.

I would also work on getting the TV out of the corner. It would look better where the toy shelf is with the chair where the TV is now.

We need to see the fourth corner of the room, the one cattycorner from the TV.

Center the rug on the fireplace before you move the furniture.

Im not sure if it is my monitor but the paint color in your room is very harsh. I think changing that paint color will go a long way in revamping your space. It doesn't relate to anything in the room, fireplace, rug etc. I am so distracted by it that I can't really focus on anything else in the room.

@pink peony I totally agree! although I am at a loss as to what color!

I would do the white color in the other room. I think your rug contains that color or a lighter cream. It will make your wood casing look beautiful. Sometimes you don't always need a color. I would then float your sofa in the room facing the fireplace (if it will fit in that direction) and then I would use your toy cubby shelves behind the sofa as a sofa table.Turn the rug so the long sides go against your sofa and your fireplace. Get more of the fabric bins for the top portion to hide the clutter. Anything that doesn't fit neatly in the toy cubby shelves needs to find a new storage place. For this reason you may consider doing a leather or fabric upholstered coffee table that opens up to store things in. Do you have a plug in your floor? I would place two lamps on the top of the shelf cubby behind the sofa. if you can. Once that is done I would think long and hard as to if you really need to keep the angled TV console because doing two matching consoles on either side of the fireplace that fit in there would look nicer and you can easily fit the TV on top of one against the wall but under the windows. You can place the chair to one side of the sofa so you create an L shaped seating arrangement. Get a round end table to place between the sofa and chair. If you would like to bring another chair in for the opposite side I would consider a lighter fabric to brighten up all the dark furniture. Now that your sofa is off the large picture window you can dress that window with some drapery panels on each side. As far as wall art what you have is too small and too random. Every little piece of wall doesn't and shouldn't have something hanging on it. A couple of large intentional pieces of art would be better. Group all your family pictures onto one wall and do a gallery wall of those framed photos. Perhaps the wall the cubby is on now. But make sure you have enough to fill that wall up so it doesn't look wimpy. Have you considered having a dark wood mantle added to your fireplace. Wood that would match your window casing? That would look really nice and someone knows what they are doing can trim back the three random stone "shelf" pieces on the fireplace too. If you were to do that A colorful painting can be leaned against the stone and sit on the mantle becoming a real focus to the room.

Nice change to the light color. The fireplace does not need an accent wall -- it is the accent. Paint al the walls the same color. The blue chair even gets lost over there. Get throws and pillow covers in that awesome teal color. If you keep the teal blue wall, move the chair to the left of the sofa, facing the fireplace.

You could mount the tv over the toy cubby. Even better if you have a credenza there instead, but I understand making room for the family to function.

The new wall colors really complement your rug. I don't mind the accent wall, since there's actually something there to accent. What color/style is the chair you are getting?

I actually love the teal with the red; it's an awesome combination. Just not sure I'd have made the fireplace wall the accent wall since there's already so much going on there.

That triangular table is really too small to be a coffee table for that long sofa. Now if you had a second one and put them side by side...that would be cool.

thanks for the comments everyone! I placed this chair in the corner I think it helps it pop against the teal wall. I can also understand the teal being a little busy with the fireplace but I had to compromise with my husband as he did not want an all white room. I can also see the coffee table being a bit small but I need space for my toddler to play as the living room is his play area. I'm so much happier with my new living room I think it's a much bigger improvement than what I was working with before!

Yes, the yellow chair is much better there and family compromises happen. Much better. Your room looks cozy. I love that rug.
