@vaporvac - there are Canadian climbers that supposedly would work here. The problem is finding them to buy. I have never seen any of them available in the garden centres or big box stores. Even though they are carrying the newer Canadian varieties like the artist series or the Canadian shield one. I think it's probably because they are "old" varieties for mass markets. But I still think the cane damage would be significant here.

vaporvac - I have tried all the Canadian roses I think. I planted William Baffin, John Davis and John Cabot and another that I can't remember it's name. They just dwindle and never really grow. I think the problem occurs when the temps hit the high 90s (temp and humidity) for most of the summer. I don't think they do well in heat. Most of my rugosas have died out also, as well as lilacs.

Parade This one wants to get a lot taller than a 4' fence. I trained canes sideways even though a lot of them were up in the air. This plant got a lot of cold damage and I had to cut out some big main canes . However it is coming back.

Wow Erasmus you grow them so stunningly .... they look perfect on your fence !! There is nothing like a classic white picket fence with roses . I don’t know parade .. going to look that up.

Peggy Martin, i Think it covered the 8 foot wide trellis in its first year.

Gosh, I think my Parade needs freeing from its pot this year! That is gorgeous as is the PM and Zephy! Lily, can't believe you're not tuned in to Parade, but it's an early New Dawn child so perhaps too thorny. I love mine. ARE carried it, although not sure this year. They discontinued some goodies.

Erasmus, your roses are something to behold! I keep going back to look again and again.

Garden nut, I planted Peggy M late last summer. If she will grow to a fraction of the size of yours, I will be beside myself.

Toolbelt, your Zephy is one of the best I've seen, along with Erasmuses growing into the crabapple tree. Roses growing to those heights take my breath away.

Lunar Mist, the soft yellow climbing sport of Colette, is reportedly hardy to z2b. Mine was a good 8' and still growing when voles got it. That's tall for here. Northland is almost sold out of their supply this year. I mention it because there are so few climbers that actually climb in our colder zones and this one's not always easy to find. I'm thrilled to have it again.

Lily, I now ALWAYS wear a baseball cap, visor forward and glasses! Denim shirts and pants! At least with the ND clan the thorns are well spaced unlike Munstead and the rugosas. I slipped and fell into Basye's Purple Rugosa last year and dragged its canes down the hill that.That was NOT fun. Sometime those tiny prickles are worse as they get stuck. I'm now thinking Darlow's Enigma may be the worst as its thorns go straight out so are hard to avoid. Plus, they're like needles

Glad to see someone else loves Clair Matin - mine is covered in beautiful lightly scented blooms in spring! Cant locate my photos right now, but Tess of the d'Ubervilles is a wonderful climber - I have 2. Blooms all summer. Thorny, but so what! One of my favorites is the very fragrant Pink Don Juan - huge hot pink blooms, just gorgeous! I saw a Cl. Pearly Gates on a garden tour years ago that I have never forgotten - and plan to get one day. Probably my favorite is Crepuscule. I have several........they never fail to thrill me when in bloom with those hundreds of peach ice cream colored blooms. Also Westerland, Polka, Royal Sunset, Tropical Skies, Above All are great in the apricot/orange color.

These are all gorgeous. Good thing Zepherine is thornless, Toolbelt..it is a good choice for a gateway.

Parade is just very vigorous. Gets some blackspot. Repeat is ok but most of the bloom is in spring in my garden. It's pretty thorny. It would be good on a taller structure. Does well own-root.

Have thought about getting Claire Matin.

I noticed some posts questioning the existance of hardy climbing roses for Canadian climates. I have grown William Baffin in my zone 4B garden for over 25 years - 4 of them actually because it is a lovely pink. The canes do not die back in the coldest winter. To my knowledge John Davis and John Cabot are equally hardy. There may well be others. Felix Leclerc is a newer variety just put in my garden this year and I don't know if it will reach the height of the others mentioned above. I cannot imagine any of them dwindling in the heat, but if these die because your climate is too hot, then you obviously have a much greater choice of climbing roses that are hardy in your area than those of us in the cooler climates. How lucky you are. Perhaps they are not carried as much in the big box stores, and not as popular as they once were, but any real nursery in Canada should carry them. If not there is always mail order.

Thanks mary! Could you comment on how well they each repeat and their health?Where in Z4b do you live? They actually had a pretty good selection of the "Canadian" roses including the Morden series at Home Depot last summer. If they have them again I may get some for my lower level.

I think you must mean the "MorDen" series of roses. Yes, Morden as in Morden, Manitoba. Many of the great older Canadian roses are either / or co-ooperations of Morden and Ottawa's experiments. Where would we be without Isabella Preston?

I live just East of Ottawa. I find the William Baffins tend to produce all the way through the summer, with the biggest flush in end of June - early July, as most roses. If we get extremely wet weather there may be some yellowing of leaves, but it's a work horse. I have clay soil so it holds the extra moisture. The canes become very thick, easily as thick around as my thumb and each year I must remove a few of the oldest each spring to keep things fresh. I have heard good things about John Davis and John Cabot depending what colour calls to you. I'm sure you could find more feedback from the other forums. It is a double, but not a really full double form.

I was working in a Canadian Tire Garden centre for several years and for some reason we never carried any of the hardy climbers. It was very disappointing even though I asked specifically for them, and they had the power to order from whatever grower they wanted. It's just not the same as a real nursery, even if the store is not American owned. Perhaps these have become "out of fashion" with such a profusion of new varieties constantly on the market. Perhaps they don't want to understand that gardening in the south is not the same as the north. Their loss.

Thank you. WB seems like a great rose for a back area. I'm also really liking Oscar Peterson. I find the Canadian breeding program fascinating and yes, I did mean Morden! ; ) I used to live in Montreal and love visiting the roses in the Botanical Garden and still find it useful to see what they grow, although they will often go to extreme lengths to overwinter more tender varieties so one has to research a bit.

Funny that you mention Morden. When I purchased my original WBs at White Rose (long time ago) one was shorter. It took me many years to learn that one was mislabelled and actually Morden Centennial. So I moved it from the arbour and it is totally gorgeous now that I don't expect it to grow over 5 feet tall. Here I find the snowcover is wonderful. I have even overwintered a "Love Song" rose, my first tender rose purchase. I did not add any protection. My biggest rose obstacle is the Japanese Beetles. Where are you located?

Mary, you are so right. If not for the Canadian roses, there'd be no height in my garden. John Davis, John Cabot, Wm. Baffin and Therese Bugnet all give me reliable height, and the first 3 even climb. The Mordens, Blush, Centennial and Sunrise all give me roses I can depend on to survive winter. Martin Frobisher, a delicate looking Canadian rugosa isn't a climber, but is a tall, shrub that would grow on the dark side of the moon. I removed him last year because he came up in a walkway and got too big to get around. So, I should stop my bellyaching and enjoy what I have instead of wishing for teas and others that will not survive here. I will add that Dortmund and Westerland have pretty good height, and I shouldn't forget Bonny, my tallest climber, but I hold my breath every year on that one.

I think I need a clone! That just screams charm! Jacques Cartier is a climber? I'm trying to root a cutting and just thought it was a big bush. I hope mine takes is yours is really beautiful. Now I'm really sad my Mac died and it's bad spot. I really need to get another one.

I would be happy to take cuttings. It repeats and has the best hips in the garden. Very thorny though!

I don't know if JC was supposed to be a climber but that is what it wanted to do..
