Maximize storage, budget remodel kitchen

I have a fairly small kitchen with few cabinets and counterspace. I am trying to make a few upgrades to make it more modern while maximizing the space. I have attached some pictures. A few obstacles include the two windows. The cabinets beneath the one window are the is the pantry. The other window is fairly large and its presence, along with the register, precludes any additional storage in that area. I would like to spend $5,000 or less on upgrades. I am thinking of adding a row of cabinets to the top to add height. Painting all cabinets white or another light color. Adding new backsplash, new counters and new floors. Possibly L shaped open shelving over the sink extending to the window. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hoping to get more of something like this with the white cabinets, butcher block counters, etc.

Is it a no-no to just have cabinets across the window wall without raising the window? It seems there's just about 10 inches, plus the coffee curtain (which is very sweet).

IMO the first thing to tackle is raising that window it causes all kinds of greif. That sink int he corner has to move the stove makes no sesne where it is you really need a KD but where you have the open shelves now would be a perfect space for pantry storage . That window with the cupboard under it needs to go so that you just have the glss door .

Any chance of changing the window so you can make an L-shape?

Invest in raising that window above counters. That window will always limit the possibilites. Imagine a nice L shape kitchen. So much better it could be.

We raised the window in our kitchen remodel and it was not much $$ at all. Made a HUGE DIFFERENCE in our kitchen and what we were able to do.

Strongly encourage you to change that window as a first step. Then it makes it worthwhile to talk about cabinets for this space. Otherwise, you are putting lipstick on a pig. (And most double bowl sinks require a 36” sink base.)

Unfortunately, doing what needs to be done will cost lots more than $5000. But it would be well worth it! But it can be done. And moving that hot air register is a minor detail.

Quick sketch of how raising window can get sink under window & more storage where sink was. Moving plumbing clise by saves $ than moving further usually.

Once the window is up,it will be fixed & never hinder any more future remodels. I do linke the trim above the windows, I would try to keep that detail.

With all do respect, I would not invest too much into new cabinets, until the floorplan can be fixed.

You'll get more bang for your buck later when you can adjust the window height.

To get the kitchen better use until then use a piece of furniture or shelving on that wall. So, it can easily be moved & used elsewhere when a whole remodel can be done.

Getting this kitchen updated with a better floorplan will add value to your home in future. i have been in the real estate & remodeling business 12+ years. I try to advise clients to put their hard earn $ where it could bring the most return. In my market, I know this kitchen would be an issue,but it has sooo much potential.

I hope you can find a good deal getting at least the smaller window adjusted.

Raise both windows. They look like they could be reused without having to buy smaller ones. Also consider redoing the window+door arrangement. Then you'll have the freedom to make a wonderful new floor plan.
