Needs character!

Just bought this home and need help with stone ideas/bookshelves (?) and window coverings. The paint color is more taupe than the gold color it’s showing. TY

Stacked stone (or most any finish) can be “right” or tacky depending on context—what is the style of the house, where is the house (what region and what setting—urban vs ?). For instance, I would never do it in a New York apartment or Boston Victorian townhouse, but in rural or outdoorsy spots (upstate New York) it fits. Similarly, shiplap is great in coastal settings (no surprise there) but I looks silly in Chicago or Washington DC city homes. So, I’d suggest you address overall style for the whole home, including the exterior, and the setting. Otherwise it looks cool on day one (everything looks cool when it’s fresh and new) but in 5 years will look silly and dated ("what was I thinking?”) like the suburban homes done in Victorian style back in the 80s.

Are you referencing the fireplace and the recesses either side of it?

Yes. Thinking stacked stone and bookshelves on each side. Lighter stone and cream cabinets at base - floating shelves? Needs to be lightened up.

I wouldn’t do anything to the fireplace. wait until you paint the walls what you want, and window coverings, rugs, furniture, etc, and then reassess. I think the fireplace mantel and surround are fine, but either way I would wait. Will you have a tv in this room? If you want builtins on each side of the fp, I would do some custom fitting base cabinets on the lowers with floating shelves above painted the same color as the mantel. (you could also put a tv on the base cabinet)

One long rod over window with linen drapes perhaps, add colour in your art and accessories

Love the last picture....we have the Remington on our stone fireplace...no beautiful picture however :^( I agree with the poster who mentioned linen curtains....
