I appreciate the article however the article didn't address what I was looking for - anyone have any idea on how many 6 inch lights and where placement should be in the 12x24 room with foot ceiling? We have an electrician for the work but need a designer/lighting person to help with placement in this room. Thanks!

From what I've seen, it always look best to have balanced pools of light,

So, one each in the 4 corners and then a pair on both side of fireplace with same symmetry over sofa - so 2@ on either side of ceiling fixture

One caveat, is the fireplace centered in the room?

Since your TV is above your fireplace I would do one that was centered like you would w/a piece of art.

So I would say eight.

If you can swing it $$, I would add some lighting to the built-ins.

/\/\/\ To which I would add that I would use 4" not 6" with 8' ceilings...

Thanks for above info - we are going to remove the ceiling fixture that is shown in photo - so there will only be recessed. Should we return the 6" we have and get 8 of the 4"? Four in the corners and then four placed symmetrically around center of room?

Yes

what do you think of putting four of the 6 inch around the perimeter corners and the 4" inside the perimeter?

A couple of calculators:

Forget 6” cans they are dated and totally unessessary with LED buls and unless you want everything to have a yellow cast go to 3500K bulbs

Personally, I would keep the ceiling fixture box and put up a more decorative ceiling fixture-- also keeping it on it's own line so it can be dimmed.

A recessed can dead center of the room really doesn't work unless it's over something like a table. If you were to swap out ceiling light for a can, I would have an eyeball fixture so that it can be directed towards art over sofa or art above fireplace so future homeowners have that option if they don't want a TV there.

IMO, I wouldn't mix can sizes. Also, if you go w/LED, make sure they're dimmable.

So helpful, thank you!

I second the recommendation to replace the semi flush center fixture with a new one that provides uplight as well as overall illumination. The disadvantage of going with only cans is the ceiling itself is never illuminated with the end result making the ceiling feel lower.

Something like this but not hanging down more than 12”. The fixture you have now is really acting as a downlight - so look for semi flush fixtures or ones that have a good amount of side illumination if you find a flush mount. Hope that makes sense.
