Is this even an insect?

I dug this up while pulling weeds. It looked like some sort of insect pupa with the naked eye, but on the pictures it looks like a miniature pine cone with this pattern. Any idea?

No idea. The scales are sure weird. Do you still have it? Preferably in a jar under a bit of loose soil?

I should have put it in a jar, but I just put it back where I found it.

Wish we had a way of determining the relative scale, compared to a coin, a pencil, or other common object. Looks like pine cone debris after a squirrel feast, to me.

It was about 10 mm in length.

It looks like a small pollen-bearing (male) cone to me.
