I happened to be on Slippertalk asking a paph question from Ray (of First Rays). Noticed a thread about LED lights. Within that thread, there was a poster who reported very good success over a long period of time with ALT LEDs. She (?) listed her source for them as Orchids Limited. So I went onto their website and they do indeed offer an interesting array of LEDs. The point of this message isn’t so much to encourage anyone to buy these bulbs, but to inform anyone who may be interested that they provide really helpful growing information in terms of brightness and plant distance from LED bulbs of varying brightness. The info is sort’ve strung out on different long webpages so I made my own Fact Sheet and Table that includes all the information for all three of the ALT LEDs they offer (each available in two-to-four choices of beam width). I think it’s the sort of info that applies to LEDs generally, not only to these particular bulbs. Anyone who wants it let me know and I’ll send it to you as a PDF. I concluded what I’ve been suspecting for awhile - that I was drastically over-lighting my orchids. In fact, for these 25 watt/250 watt equivalent spots I’m using, I raised them almost to the upper limit of the setup and I don’t notice any difference in the brightness. But the PAR value goes down just a bit, which is a good thing. Instead of between 500-600 umols, I now have between 300-500. By all reports this is still pretty bright for orchids. But I think it’s going to be an improvement. I might even take a couple of fixtures away completely after observing for awhile. For now, I can fit my new standard Cattleya very nicely under one that I raised all the way up. She looks very pretty and smells even better.
