How do I salvage this trunk?!

Welp—I thought it would be a good idea to sand this trunk down to its original wood to better go with earthy tones in my living room, but it turns out it just has a crappy plywood under the paint. How do I salvage this? I have Annie Sloan chalk paint in original that I could use if needed....

if you stain the plywood it could bring out some of the texture and make it look less crap. this way you can try to salvage your idea and if it doesn't work then cover it in the chalkboard paint!

Paint it. It doesn't need a wood top to distract from the motif. ..........paint: ) There's probably a better use for it than a cocktail table too

You could paint the top and then have a slim cushion made to go on it. Y'know -- turn it into a bench of sorts! Pretty trunk.
