There is no "standard" for island overhang. Range is 12' to 18". Advise actual measure.

Could you use an upper cabinet? You'd have to have it sitting on a platform frame anyways, so maybe this would work?

Well you Are correct mine is definitely not standard the short side is 7 inches and the long side is 8 1/2 inches don’t even know why the kitchen designer let that happen anyway what do you suggest

As you can see not too much room it’s the walk through to garage mud room. That is why I was going to eliminate the stores on that side feel it’s kind of cramped even when you go to the refrigerator this is a three-year-old house and kitchen was not thought out very well and now after living in it I can see you we need to change

I have storage under my island & it's a great use of what normally would be wasted space. I keep platters, candles and other not-used-everyday kind of stuff. My counter extends 12" -- the longest possible to have without using corbels, which I didn't want. My counter fabricator instead inlaid a piece of steel as a type of anchor and I've never had a problem.

In one house, we ran two rows of IKEA shelves under the overhang to put cookbooks, storage baskets, etc.

You can get wall cabinets, modified depth to fit there. You will have to build a toe kick platform flushed and apply a base trim. You alos have to account for overhang and those eased edges. If your overhang is 7 1/2" then you will only be able to put a 6" deep cabinet under there. The bigger issue is finding the cabinets that will go with what you have... Do you know the brand? Does the finish even exist anymore? What other color would you do instead?

It may be easier to replace the whole island that way it can be reconfigured to maximize the storage.

    Good luck!!

Ikea is a great idea for inspiration on "What can I do with a 7-8" deep cabinet space?" They have a number of interesting tilt-out cabinets for shoe storage, and while I can't think how I'd use them in a kitchen ... I bet there are things that would work well there.

I am in still in contact with the company of the cabinets there Schrock cherry with a cedar finish which is no longer available so I found a finish very similar in the brand I am working with United builders to add a coffee bar area also across from the island on a wall that has nothing right now maybe I can see if they can also find me a cabinet that would work in that area of the island I just feel the cabinets are only3 1/2 years old and can’t see getting rid of the island unless I repurpose it and have two islands with a new top I am just not a fan of a sit down island rather just have a working island

I was going to use the island for my bar area but it’s 2 inches too long for the wall that I need to put cabinets on this kitchenNeeds a wow factor the rest of the house is fine but the kitchen doesn’t match the rest of the house

You could try smaller stools at the counter. Those chairs are far too big. Then they could be pushed inwards when not in use. I would build a pantry elsewhere if at all possible.

You can diy shelves on the back and then paint the whole island a different color. This would not be for the faint of heart but even if you hired it out it might be cheaper than getting a whole new island. 6 inches is not a lot of storage and it might look quite cluttery unless you add doors, which will add to the $.

Perhaps you could post on your neighborhood website (like Nextdoor) for a local carpenter to give you an estimate.

This blogger has enlarged her island. She did not add exactly what you did but you can get an idea of what to do.

I think Debbi Washburn has the right idea,, I would stay away from DIY, shelving, but would consider having the local woodworker build and stain shelving to match existing, Also ask the vendor if they have cabinet doors that can be purchase, it is possible to save the counter and keep exiting cabinets, you just need to plan it well

space planning wise I think is more space efficient to do a working island. it will look cleaner and less crowded at at the same time provide you with additional storage, even if the shelves or cabinets are 6" deep of usable space, there is plenty of items in a working kitchen that would fit that criteria

    Good luck

You also may want to call Schrock. Many times companies still can do a few pieces in a discontinued color. They have to keep some of it in case of damage replacements. And since you said your cabinets are only 3 1/2 years old, you might have a chance. Dealers will often say the color is discontinued and call it a day... it's worth a shot
