carpenter bees: dead or sleeping?

February 18, 2019

I work in a boat yard on Long Island Sound. We use 3 x 12 rough sawn spruce for scaffolding and had occasion to set the scaffolding up inside a heated building. After about a week, we came in and found this group of bees on the heated concrete floor dead. They were directly below a staging plank which upon inspection had many holes from bees. So I wonder what killed them. It lookd like they all crawled out and died, one after the other. Anybody have a clue what's going on. In the photo, the bees have been assembled on the table saw with the plank behind them. Thanks for any thoughts!
