Hi Lexi! You'll probably get lots of great advice here, and undoubtedly, someone will link you to some previously posted threads about the pros and cons of soil mixes. I'd say it depends on how much you want to put into it. No plant wants to sit with waterlogged roots, so preventing overwatering (which is less about frequency, and more about water retention) is your goal. You can jump through hoops to gather certain ingredients and screen them to a particular size, etc etc. Or, you can use a good quality potting mix, add some extra Pearlite (not peat!), and use a wick. The wick (a piece of cotton cord, like clothesline cord) will help drain off excess water, and also tell you when it's time to water (when it's dry or nearly dry).
