Bar area in finished basement

I am almost finished with the tv/ family room of my basement, thanks to everyone on this website. I love it, but now that I will be spending more time down there, I have to do something with the bar area! It's an awkward set up, not really room for a table but even with the bar stools there is a lot of empty, boring space. Im attaching pictures from several angles in the basement. ignome all the junk sitting around. I haven't ordered the bar stools but have several options I'm happy with. Ive thought about a mirror or floating shelves above the sink. What do you think? What should I do in that open area? What about the middle third of the basement? I think I would like to have a conversation area, maybe 4 accent chairs and a small coffee table? Thanks for your help, I'm anxious to see how you all suggest i make that bar space pretty and functional!

If it was my space I would remove the bar and add a games table, foosball, hockey what ever right now that piece can’t have stools since there is no overhang ans since that space is kind of out of the main space you will find no one will sit there so make it a fun place instead. You can still keep the storage on the right wall with the fridge

I would paint cabinets black, and get some barstools, black with possibly blue seats, that would coordinate with blue draperies. Get a big piece of wall art, possibly poster art for wall..see large rectangle that I drew. You could update hardware on cabinets to brushed nickel, to coordinate with stainless appliances. Lastly, if you want to add artwork by cabinets, where I drew smaller rectangles, you could add 2 additional pictures placed as drawn,

There is plenty of overhang on the bar, not sure why you can't see it in the picture. It is pretty dark. large picture at the end does fill in the space some, is that a better option then some kind of shelf or small pub table?

The bar is recessed, I guess that's why there isn't overhang. Our kitchen bar is the same way and there is pleanty of room for sitting. I took a couple more pictures that are brighter.

Would something like this work on the wall at the end of the bar? Or even between the windows? I love it, would love to use it somewhere.

Ok, I will get the bar stools in there first and change the lights up. I think that helps "fill in" the dead space for sure. I will hold of on painting the cabinets, they arent what we wanted but they are very nice cherry, custom cabinets so I will try to make it work. What does clad mean? Also what are your suggestions for that space above the sink? Thanks for coming to visit!

Oh, the garbage is kept under the sink...I had it while I've been working and cleaning down there. Sticks out like a sore thumb I see!

Subway mirrored tiles in area above sink, you could still add a couple of glass shelves, it will lighten area I think. Your room looks lovely and cozy

You could do a seating area similar perhaps, need comfy chairs, hang your art work and may a arched floor lamp, plant if enough room

Have you thought to paint or change the table down there? it seems not to really go with anything else you have....

Clad basically means cover up.. put on top.

Im thinking, home depo has a good selection of peel and stick back splash which I would want here, and a shelf that holds wine glasses.

I thought about backsplash..love the peel and stick idea. I got lots to keep me busy. That table is an old one I chalk painted...agree I need a different one there.

@RLRelocation, is that a stainless steel backsplash in the picture? Any thought she on color or type of backsplash?

It depends on your style of entertaining. I would prefer a large tall high top table for socializing, games. Think of your favorite place to go have some drinks to give you inspiration.

I think you should go buy serval squares in different patterns, that way you can get a better feel. I just did that one because its not too busy and kinda goes with the rustic-esque feeling?

Possibly a TV on the wall by the bar to be enjoyed by people sitting at the bar. What about a high top style table?

How much is this really going to get used? It is looking like a living room. You need to get some bright colors in there bright pillows, lights over the bar, bright pictures, make it a fun place to be. Brighten it up.

I think fun artwork or a dartboard would look great. I wouldn’t pack too much in the small space or you’ll risk it looking too cluttered.

I also like the idea of food or drink posters on that wall. With barstools, that’s probably all you’ll need.

Nice draperies but they are hung too low. You should replace them with longer draperies hung just below the ceiling.

With the addition of barstools, there won’t be rom for a table between the bar and the window. The frig seems way too large for a bar and seems to dominate the space.

the wood wine glass shelves and stainless backsplash has been ordered. If it turns out ok ....I will post pictures when. I'm finished. Quick question, the backsplash is peel and stick, should I put the shelf up first then build splash around it or backsplash the entire area and hang shelf on top??

    Thanks, karen

    hi Karen,

Put all the back splash up then the shelf.
