15” is the standard minimum. If you have taller people in your family and have the room, 18” is better.

I disagree on the 18 inch overhang. I have designed and built custom kitchens for almost 30 years and I find in a kitchen situation where there are stools 12 inches minimum is perfectly fine. Sitting at a dining table you need the extra room because you tend to slouch. Sitting at a bar is more upright and You really don’t need that much space. I proved it by sitting in front of a cabinet base and sliding a piece of cardboard out until I was comfortable. It ended up being 12 inches and that’s where it has been ever since.

We have a 12 inch overhang and it’s plenty for seating. Even my 6’5” husband who’s all legs has no issues sitting at the counter.

You can disagree all you want, but the NKBA minimum is 15” and there are plenty of threads and comments on here about how 12” is not comfortable for many. Good for you that you found what works FOR YOU, but for MOST, 12” does not work and is generally done when cramming seating into a space that will not accommodate the NKBA guidelines. When space is not an issue, going with the minimum recommended by NKBA (15”) is the best course of action - or more if space allows and there are taller people to be accommodated in daily use.

15 inches,unless, you have floor clearance issues at the island seating. An extra inch on the island counter is more useful than an extra inch on the floor.

I would concur with pagosapamie, I've been doing kitchen designs for several years and 12" has always been sufficient. If design allows for a deeper overhang, then that's great too.
