Have you thought of hanging the mirror horizontally? Your wall colour intrigues - a soft purple?

Unfortunately the mirror cannot be moved. Wall color is BM Collingwood. Didn't intend to paint my walls purple but unfortunately the Collingwood does look purple in this room. Hubby says no to repainting, so I'm stuck with it.

I'm a huge purple fan so I think it looks great with the mirror and as your blue chair's background.

Don't mean to be obstinate but why can't the mirror be moved?

It is just so-o-o-o heavy. We couldn't even get it off the wall (with 4 people) to paint behind it.

You have a beautiful space. What I would do first is consider rearranging the furniture. Right now, the huge mirror is grounded by that small chair.

I would not rule out turning/moving the mirror. If need be, you can hire a handyman to do this. Let's do more research, first, though.

If I placed the sofa on the wall under the mirror, what do you suggest I do with the wall space on either side of the mirror?

I'd have to know how wide the mirror is and how wide the sofa is. Also, I don't know if the sofa would end up being centered under the mirror, with the new arrangement.

Best to always hang art after furniture is arranged.

I’d also bite the bullet and rotate the mirror. Then move the couch under it. Place the two chairs where the couch was and try the blue chair in the corner where the telescope is and completely open the view. My wife loves family photos and your blank wall space might work for that if you’re so inclined.

That mirror was put up, it can come down ...even if you have to tape it and break it...

I know it's a pain, but it's hung way too high. the mirror should be lowered about a foot. Ditto if you turn it longways.

consider doing a taller plant in the corner (or put that current on a tall plant stand. you need some vertical decor to go along w/that mirror.

what if you moved the blue chair and found a console to use under the mirror? (you still have to lower it!)

something along this look. you could do lamps on either side. notice how high above the console this hangs. this is how you want yours.

or you could do something like this bench

Oh gosh....I'm sure getting the mirror down will be a real pain, but where there is a will there is a way. Your room is SO beautiful and the mirror height and scale just brings the whole room down. However, if it must stay, I'd switch the sofa and chair so that the weight of the mirror is at least grounded, and then place a gallery of smaller pictures on either side (like Judy G's pic).

The blue chair looks pretty short, so maybe the mirror wouldn't look like it's hung too high if there was a console table under it as Beth suggested. What is the distance from the bottom of the mirror to the floor?

Okay, we rearranged the furniture. Once we put the sofa against the mirror wall it just didn't feel right as far as distance from the fireplace and the rest of the furniture, so we pulled it away from the wall 14". Our intent is to get a sofa table to put behind the sofa.

looks better. mirror still needs to be dropped a foot. I'd actually rotate it so you have the longer variation. needs to be about 3-4" above the back of the sofa.

Eliminate the blue chair and place the 2 white chairs angled by the fireplace. Then add 2 end tables on either side of the sofa.

I would still recommend lowering & turning the mirror sideways (but let's see how it all plays out). I'd prefer the sofa against the wall. Don't use a sofa table unless there is no other option.

I wanted to mention also, that blue is not a good choice, when trying to eliminate purple. Instead, I would recommend creams, tans and browns.

Thanks for all of the ideas! We are going to leave it as is for a week or so and see what we think, and try some of the suggestions.

A console table would anchor the mirror on the wall. Add some accessories tp the table

You have a beautiful room! Well done! Your seating arrangement in first set of pictures looks awesome! The worst thing about your room is... The mirror! It's hung way too high, it's a weird warm colour when almost everything in the room is cool greys and blues, and I find the scale is too big and chunky for this room. Why are you letting this mirror boss you around? Move it to another room and replace it with artwork. Or a photo wall. Good luck!
