Kitchen update ideas

We just bought a house! Let me preface this by saying we will NOT be completely renovating this kitchen for several years, but want to affordably update it maybe with some fresh paint (willing to paint cabinets and/or walls), a new rug, anything inexpensive that will give it a fresh look.

This kitchen is in a beautifully preserved 1925 Craftsman house and we love all of the historic details. My style is eclectic/world travel inspired decor, so I want to make sure the kitchen fits with both of those. The red appliances are very cool and high end, but I just don’t really know how to work with red!Any ideas would be appreciated!!

Congrats on your new house! Looks like someone thought they'd try to strip the paint from the cabinets, then gave up. :) There are some regular posters here who are craftsman fans. I'm sure they'll find your thread and offer up advice.

In an old house, something always needs attention. So, I'd live in it for a while and let the house tell me what it needs.

love it. I agree-live with it for a while, nowhere to hurry. Painting walls is much much easier than painting cabinets, so if you really wish-you can take their blue they used for inside the cabinets, similar shade I mean, and take it further on the walls. Will be a bit too chopped a look, even though punchy one-so don't hurry, take all into account. Love how they used old cabinet-I would keep to this distressed nature of it, adds character.

Actually all you need, at least for now before you know for sure kitchen functions great for you-is your yow stuff, your own art,and bigger rug on the floor, if you want a rug-something maybe in William Morris's vibe?

just as examples as I don't like hand tufted for kitchens

check ebay..can't give examples right now as everything that is perfect in terms of color is somehow huge from what I see..but check out the selection

or you can go with a vinyl floor cloth-very easily washable

they have many many styles, not only arts and crafts ones..great site

Congrats on your new house! Exciting times. Have fun making it yours.

What a cool kitchen! I am sure one of the pros will weigh in with some great ideas.

If it were me, I would minimize the wall decor, rugs, and other little items, and just let the appliances shine. For open shelving like that, I think it looks best if all of the displayed items are the same color (like white dinnerware with clear glasses). The one thing that I find a little bit strange is the current owner's arrangment of open shelving and cabinets with doors. I think it would look more cohesive with either-or. I think it's the asymmetry that's throwing me off and/or that one open cabinet in the top row.

If you wanted to update the cabinets in the meatime, I think the very lightest shade of gray could look nice without competing wtih the red, although I also quite like the white.

Is that wallpaper or tile on the back wall by the fridge?

As others have said, I would not do anything to it but just live in it for awhile.

I would probably want to put a door on the upper cabinet unless you plan to truly make it a showcase because open as it is, it adds to the visual clutter and given how dramatic the stove is, I would want to minimize the clutter.

During my recent remodel, I wanted to use elements of Craftsman so I found some sources that did some beautiful reproductions of textiles and wall coverings. If you want a window treatment, you might take a look at some of those possibilities. I would either have no rugs or change out the rug to something that is less country and more Craftsman in feel.

In terms of paint, I would probably move away from the stark white paint - there are certain colors that are considered to be authentic to the period and they would go well with the appliances. Personally I wouldn't go with gray but rather with one of the light sage or beige paint colors that seemed to be the most popular when I was looking at inspiration photos.

I would google a lot of Craftsman, Arts & Crafts, Mission kitchens to get inspiration. There is a magazine called American Bungalow Magazine which is a great source. Here is their website

It’s an original pinkish tile on the back wall by the fridge. I had considered that it would be nice to either add back on a cabinet door at the top if I could find one that fits, or remove others to create symmetry.

I did just have the idea of adding some Moroccan-inspired elements in which might pair well with the red and white while bringing in pattern and transitioning nicely from our subtle worldly decor in the dining/living areas. Thoughts?

Oh how cool. I think that pink tile is actually "in" again. I also like the idea of reviewing the American Bungalow magazine for paint colors.

I think if you judiciously accesorize with Morrocan-inspired elements, it will look great. That room is mostly fine as-is, it just needs some editing, and possibly some adding or subtracting of cabinet doors.

I also don't see why not. I think it's great idea, actually.

    Whether dishes, or fabrics..a basket..

I immediately thought of Iznik I confess, because I'm so much into florals-even though it's not exactly Moroccan, is Turkish, as far as I remember

Are the cab door and drawer useable next to the stove? You can have a matching door made for the missing one.

While I don't think one needs to be slavishly accurate in terms of recreating the period, I would take a look at Arts & Crafts kitchens in terms of how they incorporated designs before using something that is currently on trend like Moroccan tiles but is not of the period.

If you read about Greene & Greene who designed absolutely gorgeous Arts & Crafts homes like the Gamble House in Pasadena, they were influenced by their visit to an exposition in Japan and the house - while not resembling a Japanese house - integrates what inspired them from their visit.

Bradbury wallpaper has some incredible wall coverings and textiles which are historic reproductions from Victorian through Mod with Arts & Crafts, Art Deco and other periods in the mix as well. It's worth perusing their website to get some inspirations that might better complement your Arts & Crafts style home.

I recently finished a remodel and was inspired by Arts & Crafts; Prairie (Frank Lloyd Wright); Art Deco and Art Nouveau with a soupçon of Chinoiserie and Hollywood Regency thrown into the mix :-).

I was thinking that the previous owners made the right choice with the blue accent, to go well with the red appliances.... but then I noticed the pink tiles.

I couldn't live with the pink and red together. So I would have to either paint the tiles or cover them with beadboard.

Sage green, olive green, navy, medium and sky blue, old gold, & mushroom are all colors that will play nicely with that shade of red.

If you decide to keep the red enamel color, you can balance it out with a countertop that has a little more weight to the color, and if you even decided to go with a black counter, perhaps a pro could paint the enamel a gorgeous black. The appliances are super cool, but may not be for everyone. Google some images to see what others may have done to tie the colors together.

Those appliances are beautiful and costly... Embrace the red ( or sell them when you are ready to remodel to offset some costs). I would let them be the focal point of the room.. Simplify the rest. Not a fan of those pink tiles - either remove or repaint.

I would warm up the colors of the space. Nice cream color on the walls, paint the cabinets an off white or warm white. Maybe remove the doors of the cabinets over the window or try at least to cut out the centers and put glass in them. Paint the backs of those cabinets a matching red.

You might also want to get a nice wood countertop..

    Good luck!

I'd just paint the damaged cabinet to match the rest, and get a door for it if possible. You could probably get a new counter inexpensively, since it's a straight rectangle, and add a little contrast that way, whether you went wood-look or a neutral like gray or black. Then I agree to live with it for a while. Save anything else in a new jar for a complete gut, selling the appliances then and refinishing the floor too.

Get some doors made to replace the ones that were removed. And either remove the pink tile or have it professionally painted - I would remove it. Yes, it WILL tear up the wall, but a good plaster person can skim coat it and it will look like knew.

Then live with it for a year in order to decide whether to paint the walls or the cabinets. Obviously, painting the walls will be far easier.

What a great kitchen. Nice that no one has screwed it up. i totally love red in kitchens but the appliances seem more maroon than red. And that is nice. If the tile is original and you like it I'd try work around it. Not a color I'm crazy about. I also love wallpaper in a kitchen. You might consider wallpapering the back wall of cabinets if you plan on keeping them open. I wallpapered in my old kitchen with a small red, black and white check/plaid

I'm the other one who likes pink and that maroon-ish red together..see how you as somebody who's soon to be there everyday, react to it.

What a lovely original kitchen! I like your idea of an Moroccan style rug, and since you said your style is global/eclectic I thought I would share this photo.

I love the long colourful runner, that would be preferable to small mats. I would look for a rug that included the red and some pink to tie in the tiles. These are a couple I found on wayfair, and the multi colours in them could also inspire paint colours for the room. I suggest removing the other two doors above window (as in the pic above), and I think that shelf above sink would be so lovely with potted plants and herbs.

Thank you all so much for your ideas and insight! I really appreciate it. The idea of wallpapering the back of the open cabinets (once I open up another door to even it out) is a really fun idea. I also love the idea of a more creamy white instead of the stark white, and switching to a wood countertop if in the immediate budget. Thanks again for your time!

If you get a rug, I would suggest that you stick to a flat weave -- based on my experience, much easier to clean (I take mine outside to wash and dry in the sun)
