I do that a lot, especially when I'm growing things for container and garden use. For example, I toss a bunch of marigold seeds into a big pot, then take out clumps of them to put out into the garden. It's just so much easier to keep them watered, like you said. I used to do a lot of tiny six-packs, but now I do a few seeds in one of those larger cell packs, then take out the ones I want to grow singly and plant the rest in a clump.

I have some seeds that thrive on neglect, and I've found that tossing them into a pot in the winter and ignoring them gets me better germination than doing them any other way. Datura is one of those. I just found four datura seedlings coming up where I tossed them into a pot with a begonia in it. I forgot which kind they are, but I'll repot them when they get their second set of leaves.

Perennial hibiscus, datura, papaya, malabar spinach are just a few of the seeds that do best when planted in community pots and ignored.
