Hoya leaf help please? Brown spots, some leaf damage.

Can anyone tell me what Is going on with my new Hoya kerrii? Is it just physical leaf damage? Maybe it was overwatered at some point? I am hoping it doesn’t have anything like a fungus going on with it. Thank you so much!

HI, to me it does look like a fungal issue, probably from a little too much water, poor air circulation, or humidity too high. They like to get fairly dry before watering for me. Cinnamon is an organic weapon for fungus, that I use when I feel a little concerned for fungus. I love my hoya, and would probably start with a fungal spray for houseplants, and then keep an eye on it with follow ups of cinnamon. I have not fought a fungal problem for some time, so I hope you hear from those with a bit more experience than I do. Good luck. Hoya are pretty tough. I think you will be fine, when you know have the right id for the issue and treat it.

I grow multiple Hoyas including that one (H. kerrii, the heart leaf Hoya). I doubt It's a fungus; this Hoya sometimes grows a couple of ugly leaves, I'd leave it be. My older Kerri has its 2 newest leaves like that now, I expect it'll pass.

You said your NEW Hoya? If so, call your Vendor & ask them. If it spreads to other leaves, I'd ask for a refund &/or get rid of it.

Thank you all so much for your input. I feel like this one leaf looks worse today. Maybe i just didn’t notice it before bc I am still learning this plant. That seems unlikely though as I am obviously looking at it pretty closely. Lol. Should I take this leaf off? I kind of hate to bc it’s a nice shaped one- but it looks pretty bad and I would hate for it to spread. Should I worry about it spreading to other plants? It is in the same room but not right next to other plants. I don’t have a lot of room to isolate it while still giving it high light.

Yes this plant is new to me. I haven’t watered it yet as the soil is still wet. I understand that this plant likes to dry out but it did come to me pretty wet. I spoke with a woman at the garden center today that told me that I should repot it. I kind of hate to mess with it too much as I don’t want to over react

and stress the plant too much.

Al is it definitely Oedema? In that case can I feel confident that it is not something that will spread to other plants? Are the black marks permanent with this? The plant definitely has the wart like markings you mentioned as well.

In your plant, oedema would initially present as a water-soaked lesion you might not notice. After the cells erupt and spill their contents into intercellular spaces (spaces in tissue outside of cell walls), the tissue will turn black, then eventually brown and corky. If the ability of the leaf to carry on photosynthesis is seriously diminished, the plant will eventually shed the leaf.

That last pic is not damage I recognize. That alone looks problematic, that dark black, I'd return the plant for a refund, ASAP.

Until then, I'd move it away from other plants. The top of the leaf looks much worse that the underneath you showed earlier, seriously, I'd return it.

I'm following this with interest. I had a small Hindu rope hoya that developed black spots like those on one leaf, which then turned into fissures. When it started showing up in multiple leaves, I tossed it (I'm picky about what I'm willing to treat). I would love to know if you find an answer.

Thank you again everyone. For now I am removing the affected leaves and isolating the plant. I agree Elena, I am not going to treat it if it is too much and/or if it may affect my other plants. Karen I totally see what you are saying- however it was a difficult plant for me to acquire and it is not an easy one to return or replace. You said that you have grown Hoyas and never seen this and that makes me nervous. I won’t hang on to it forever or put my other plants at risk but I do hope that it pulls through. Elena I will post back here at a later time with any updates. Thanks again, all.

Pls say what it means: "was a difficult plant for me to acquire"? Did you ask the Supplier for a refund? It's pretty appropriate. In 20 yrs. of growing Hoyas, I've never seen this & STRONGLY suggest you get rid of it.

Your comment: "you won’t hang on to it forever" is irrelevant as contagion from an infected plant can be quick; it needs no time at all. Sorry.

Well I just have never seen one at a garden center near me so I ended up driving over an hour to a place that had one. You’re right though, Karen- if it puts my other plants at risk it isn’t worth it. I’ll call the place tomorrow where I purchased it and be more persistent about a refund. I did end up moving it to room all by itself. Do you still think it could spread?

One thing that I noticed- looking back at photos of the day that I purchased it.... the areas that are now black are the exact same spots that were white that day. When I purchased it they told me that it was fertilizer and I washed it off when I got home. Anyway the spots are exactly on the same spots and even in the same shape. Could it be topical fertilizer burn?

No, I strongly doubt it. I'd return the plant, refund or not, I would not want it in my possession or my home. I'd also tell them it's not fertilizer burn & I will not shop there again, PERIOD.

Well I sure was hoping that it wasn’t anything too serious but I so appreciate your input Karen. Thank you again.

Read the "featured answer" at the top of the thread. It begins with "It's a physiological disorder called oedema/edema ......"
