The soil in his yard is difficult to dig through. I believe the company will be breaking up the bottom of the pool.

Removing the bottom of the pool matters too, but an underground pool of gravel can absorb the water from the surrounding soil on all four sides. The huge contrast of texture between gravel and dirt or soil can make weird things happen because water will move through them in very different ways.

You would be far better off filling the hole with fill dirt and topping it with some better grade top soil.

Many companies, even the one that delivered my garden shed, have soil compactors that solve the problem of waiting for soil to settle.

They could add half the sub soil, then compact it before dumping the rest in and compacting again. The top soil won't be as big of a problem.

Just ask who ever is delivering the dirt if they have a compactor, if not, you can rent them.

generally ... roots are more in a pancake shape ... i would think two feet of soil would be good enough .... dont really know about one foot ... suppose it might depend on the plant ... we arent talking about forest sized trees here... per your history ....

many trees and shrubs grow on mountainside scree ... talk about drainage ... lol ...

how it all works with surrounding native soil.. i cant really speculate ... ...

presuming the pool was basically right out the back door ... i dont see this as a spot for any large plants .. so i dont think it should be a problem ... its not really a place you would be planting huge plants .. that might hang over the house in 50 years.. and fall over in some wind storm ...
